Hi everyone,

I'm used to dealing with Lee Enfield and other milsurp rifle; the firearm below is somewhat new to me so apologies for asking for input here. I have been tasked with appraising then selling a deceased friend's firearms.

This is not mint at all, but a bit of a strange beast. A combined Savage 24 Series S. The wood was rough, so I refinished it. I've ordered a replacement trigger guard (the original one has a crack). One of the trigger guard mounting screw isn't original (nor is its thread). The blue on the action was touched up but the result still shows some disparity. The rear sight is original but is one inherent weakness of these firearms as far as I know. The bores are really nice. The top barrel is a .22lr, the bottom is a .20ga.

Thanks for any help figuring out reasonable market value for this gun; I will be selling them hopefully in a short while (still need to finish dealing with the CFC...), my friend's widow sure will be able to use the money.

Lou

I commonly see Model 24s listed for over $400.00.

I would list it at $425.00 OBO and go from there.

I see these regularly for sale at gun shows and at gun shops for about $400.

You don't see them sell at that price very often though. I would say for a centerfire over 12 gauge would be worth in the neighbourhood of 500$. Yours is is the most common combination and configuration. I would say if you want it to move fast 250$ if you want to get maximum out of it start at 350$ take your time.

On a utilitarian gun with no collector value, "refinished" adds to the value, refinishing does not discount the value as some would have you believe. I'd buy a properly maintained and refinished gun over one with flaking wood finish and stripped bluing every time.

Thanks guys, much appreciate, this is quite helpful. I'll likely put it up for grabs in the EE section when the paperwork with the CFC is done!

"...blue book..." Gives an average of prices from all over the U.S. with no regard for regional differences. Those prices have nothing to to with Canada.
"...so I refinished it..." You're good at it too. A collector piece it ain't.
Epp's recently sold a 24V. .223 over 12 ga. Asked $525 for it. I'd guess your buddy's is worth $400ish.

Being that it is .22, I would think it to be worth more than a CF. I recently sold one for a friend in 30-30 for $425. I would think you could move that one for $500.

Actually there seems to be more people that want the rimfire versions instead of centrefire rifle calibers. A .22 / shotgun combo is a very useful small game gun. On the other hand I don't really know what a 30-30 over 12 gauge is good for.

In these parts, the rimfire / .410 combo commands the best prices, followed closely by a 20 gauge / rimfire combo. Centrefire / shotgun combos will sell for about 25% less and take longer to sell because fewer people have any use for them.

Yours would sell for $300 - $350 around here, maybe a bit more if you are patient.

These are EXTREMELY popular, though I can't understand why. It's probably due to a notion that carrying a shotgun and a rifle is more versatile than either one alone. As with any make/model, popularity = value. Personally, I find a SXS or repeating shotgun much more effective.

I had a gloriously mint Series S in 22LR over 20 ga that I sold for $600. Yours should get $500, if you're willing to wait a month or two for the right buyer to come along. $400 to $450, if you want to sell it fast.

Hate to resurrect this thread but would anyone have any info on the 24S-E model?

I tried the search option came up with nothing...

It's .22lr over 28g

Also, where can I get a copy of the fabled bluebook?

Thanks!

You can buy a CD copy at most mainstream gun shops. Or purchase online at:

Thanks StraightShooter!

What's the suggested markup to use when calculating the Canadian pricing equivilant?

Thanks StraightShooter!

Sometimes it's markup, sometimes it's markdown. The US and Canadian markets are very different in terms of what the market will actually pay for various makes and models. Condition is always important, of course.

The Blue Book is only a rough guide. Nothing can replace handling various models, shooting different guns, and remaining abreast of the trade publications and consumer opinion on sites such as this.

I don't share their enthusiasm, but lots of folks like the model 24.
