I just downloaded this off of iTunes for my iPhone... and it works!!!:

It costs $18.99 (a little expensive for an iPhone app.), but it's cheap, cheap, cheap for a functional shot timer! I just tried it with my Umarex/Colt pistol in the basement, and the quiet .177 air pistol had no trouble being recognized by the timer.

Very cool!

Buzzer is not very loud...but other than that appears to function well, would be nice to see it next to a CED or Speed timer to see if the times are consistant.
Im sure someone is going to make a few bucks of this app.

Actually, it's pretty expensive for a shot timer - $800 Iphone Plus $18.99 - if you take it to the range and it gets wet, dropped or stepped on - all common occurances. (Timers lead a very harsh life!)

Surefire has a free shot timer with adjustable sensitivity for the iphone - it's been around for a year or so.

It's cute, but unless I'm in a serious jam - a far more expendable RU Ready or CED is in my hand at the range.

I've got the surefire free app loaded on my ipod. I needed to get an iphone headset with the inline mic to make it work. I ran the earbuds inside my peltors so I could hear the beep. The app works ok, but it's not very convenient with the wires and you'll want to keep your ipod somewhere protected while still being able to get at the start button. One thing I liked was the ability to email myself the data after a practice session.

I hear what your saying, but it's a moot point for me, because I already have an iPhone. I would not expect anyone to run out and buy an iPhone/iTouch just for this app.

BTW, I only paid $200.00 for my iPhone, with a 2 year contract and
$70.00 for an iTouch, on sale.

Again, I'm not going to quibble with you here. I truly respect your experience... But, FWIW, I am extremely hard on phones (nature of the work I do). I have had some cell phones last less then 6 months, even without dropping them. My iPhone is in an "Otter Box" case and has been dropped down 4 flights of stairs with zero damage to the phone. When I take the case off, the phone looks brand new. The only way this phone is going to get damaged is if it gets flushed down the toilet, by one of my kids, or if a truck drives over it.

This is a very interesting post to me because, I have extremely bad high frequency hearing sensitivity (due to premature birth). I can barely hear most shot timers with muffs on. I was able to find a signal on this app. (there are 5 to choose from) that worked without any trouble. I actually was looking for different brands of timers with a variety of volume and tone/pitch controls when I found this app. I can't hear an RU Ready timer with muffs on and I have also read of military vets and trades people not being able to hear CED timers because of accumulated hearing loss.

I use Howard-Leight Impact Sport electronic muffs and I can hear the start tone without earbuds, or the volume turned on. The tone is heard much better though with the volume cranked... Remember I said my hearing is really bad.

I only paid $200 with a 3 year on mine 2 years back, but if we have to replace it; the fine print says $800!:D

Glad to hear it's as tough as you say. I don't run a case on mine - prefer to keep it as thin as possible for my pocket.
No worries, just pointing out some info, didn't mean to imply that you were on the wrong side of anything nor do I have all the answers.
The Iphone is really a nice tool for us shooters; Isnipe is wickedly accurate with my Tikka T3 Tac. & Lapua ammo and I've had a lot of fun with ihitfactor during practice; helps me determine if at what point, the speed is compromising the score. Even IvideoCamera lets me tape myself and see my faults.

$18 is a lot of money for an app

Umm... yes, I noted that above. My thought though is, if it does what you want, it's a lot cheaper than buying a dedicated $100-200 shot timer, that us deaf guys may not hear.

No offense taken, I just like to clarify my wording, so I don't misrepresent my intended point, or the issue.

Besides, you could never say anything wrong. You're from Rockingham... Like myself. I used to go looking for tadpoles and snakes there, long before Dunbrack, or "The Ridge" were even a blip on anybody's radar.

I've got one of the new Ipod Touch units - I added a small microphone like this one:

h ttp://gizmodo.com/5158880/ipod-touch-and-ipod-nano-get-a-mini-microphone

When I bought the mic from Ebay, I was kicking myself - sure if you plug in a mic into the earbud jack, you might get a microphone, but you'd lose the whole speaker-half of the equation. Surprisingly though, the Shot Timer works flawlessly - I can hear it, and it can pick up the shots. I use an armband with it (for jogging too), and it's not too intrusive at all.

I bought the app almost as soon as it was posted on an IPSC forum. Works well. Try the Taurus one first (if you have a Touch, and use an external mic, you won't hear the Taurus beep, so use earbuds for the test), to get a feel for using the unit. You might find yourself wondering where you'd put it, or how to keep it out of the way (and yes, in less-than-dry conditions).

As previous posters mentioned, it's an alternative to the more expensive "real" timers, but I'll admit I did find myself checking out CED and ruready.com today...

is there anything like this for a blackberry bold?

Last time I looked at this, for the Pearl, was over a year ago but the RIM version of java wasn't up to it. It might be better now. If anyone has made a decibel sound meter for the BB, it could be adapted.

I'm going to try making one of these for Android. Any HTC/Droid owners out there?
