I need to remove crappy varnish on an old laminated stock, before giving it a new oil finish. My thoughts are to use steel wool for the removal of the old varnish, since I think that chemical strippers may affect the glue between the laminations.

Anyone have any experience, thoughts, or ideas?

I think you will be rubbing for a very long time before steel wool removes your finish. 600 grit paper might be a better idea. FS

If the stock is beat-up and has safe kisses and such on it, you may want to start at @150 grit and work up to 400-600 grit. I glued a piece of leather, suede side out to a small rectangle of 5/8" plywood and used it as a sanding block. Also used a sanding sponge for the curves. My 40-50 year old Cooey stock now looks like a showpiece!!:)
Just take your time and enjoy.

What did you use for a finish.
