ive been using a variety, just wondering what others run.

which brand and weight do you use?

thanks!

I've just reloaded about 3000 rounds of 124 gn with a nice IPSC legal 130 PF strength load. But having shot some 147's as part of the testing I was a bit sorry that I didn't go with that option. The 147's feel softer while meeting the PF requirements.

For simple shooting fun though it really doesn't matter. 115's SHOULD be a little cheaper per thousand since there's less lead and/or copper in them.

I haven't shot the 147gr since I swapped the springs for lighter ones. I sometimes shoot a box of 124gr followed by a box of 115gr and don't see the difference, but maybe its just me.

FWIW, I shoot S&Bs, and will try reloading as soon as I find the 9mm projectiles to buy. Earlier, I did have FTF problems with American Eagle's 147gr RNFP ammo.

Frontier 147gr FP, from Higginson Powders or Marstar, or anywhere that has them. They're inexpensive, and reasonably consistant.

For outdoor, I've just started loading Black Bullets International, 147gr TC, on the advice of others, but I haven't shot my first batch yet (this weekend).

It's been recommended to file the piece on the slide stop that gets in contact with mag follower just enough for it to work, e.g. to lock the slide on empty mag. Otherwise it may interfere with longer bullets during feeding.

But I found out the hard way that longer bullets not seated deeply enough jam in the chamber before closing to battery before any issue with the slide stop finger was encountered.

If you're shooting regular power factory or reloaded ammo you should not be using a softer recoil spring. With the snappier recoil of the regular factory or factory spec reloads the slide's lower front shroud will be hitting the internal frame stop too hard and this could lead to cracking sooner or later.

Are you talking about the spring that fits over the guide rod (forgive my ignorance)? Because ive changed that to a #13 along with buying 1000rds of 147 gr winchester..

Yes, the guide rod spring is the recoil spring. The other one (in the mag well) is the main spring.

BCRider, I'm confused now. If 124gr factory ammo loads are too much for the #13 spring, what are the correct loads? I'm about to buy the 9mm bullets + powder for reloading, and would like to play it safe. TIA.

I have been shooting 124 gr. FMJ with 3.7 gr. of titegroup and federal 100 primers. OAL is about 1.115. Power factor with 13 lb main and 13 lb recoil is around 129 PF.

Most people advise a shorter OAL and I have to concur. Some are shooting at 1.09 (I think I was told this is what Angus shoots).

Cheers

so for us normal folk who buy our ammo does that mean 124gr is good and 147gr isnt?

I have had good luck with 147's in both reloads (Frontier) and factory (Win and Rem), but the quality of the ammo has more to do with the accuracy than the bullet weight. The most accurate load I have tried through it was a 147 grain leadless (makred on package) load from Remington; I assume it emant the encased bullet.

My shadow didnt like Wolf reload 9had to sell the 2000rds I bought lol) Im just worried about damage rather than accuracy at 15 yards.

3.7gr of Titegroup? What bullet are you using? I'm about to do my 1st batch with Aim 124gr FMJ. The only recipe I see on Hodgdon's site for Titegroup is for 125gr Sierra FMJ, 4.1gr min to 4.4gr max loads at OAL = 1.09. Did you recipe come from a book or is this from your own experience? TIA.

aridan:
I started at 3.9 gr. titegroup and got a PF of 135+ and an OAL of 1.13. I know some specs list at 4 grs or more, but I never needed that much for minor PF. Just note that this is a light load for competition. Best is get a chrono and see where it goes for you.
If it looks a little colder when shooting, I would not go much under 3.9. I am no professional but this works for me.

Cheers

Thanks for the info, Mr.Bean! I spent most of my day loading 30 rounds with 3.2/3.4/3.6gr, trying to keep my OAL at or below 1.10. Anything higher leaves the round stuck in the barrel. I'm going to try these tomorrow. I agree, a chrony would be good, but I'm not competing yet, just plinking... Thanks again!

I shot my test loads today, and now I know what BCRider meant by soft spring/ factory ammo combination. Even my hottest 124gr Aim load at 3.6gr of Titegroup was a lot softer than factory S&B with 115gr RN. I will up the load to maybe 3.9-4.0gr of Titegroup, but I think I will stop there. BTW, the gun worked reliably with 3.2 to 3.6gr, I just want to see if I can get a cleaner burn out of it, as others had suggested.

P.S. I wonder if my Jerich 941 may have problems with softer loads - it still has original springs, and I'm happy with those when using factory loads.
