I recently bought a .308 Remington 700 SS 5R Milspec. I'd like to put an aftermarket stock on it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, is it worth putting the factory stock on EE? Any ideas what it's worth?

Thanks!

Depends on the type of shooting you do. If you're doing it because you want cool looking furniture, buy something cool. Otherwise, get something that is ergonomically better suited to the style of shooting you do. There are stocks that are far better designed for prone and bench style shooting, and for the various shooting rests that are used with them.

Just remember that the money invested in the stock will not improve its shooting accuracy; there are more tangible things to upgrade.

I'll be shooting mostly prone with it, hoping to get accurate and competitive.

Maybe send a few rounds down range with it first, may turn out you like it. Is stiff, has fat for-end, palm swell personal taste - found I liked it when didnt wrap thumb over. HS also had the benefit of a nice drop in detachable mag system (10 rounders) for about $300 which is a fair bit less than Reliable's or V-Bull's system.

Can then decide whether lengthen LOP with a recoil pad, shorten it by cutting (may have to potentially add recoil pad depending how short you cut it - is hollow). Can also add a cheek rest http: //karstenskydexcheekrest.com/ found the cheek rest made a real difference - if you have a one piece rail on your rifle put your cheek on the stock, then look over the rail - will be really obvious if looking down the middle or not.

B&C 2094 http: //rifle-accuracy.com/ are fully adjustable, bipod stud is on a rail, and come in various colours/patterns and are about $550 - less $300 from HS so for $250 a reasonable upgrade. The 2094s do need to be bedded though to free float the barrel. Standard action screws work but may want to ask B&C to include the complementary longer ones anyways, can always come in useful (i.e. cut off heads and use as locating pins for bedding rifles).

And now for something completely different - Boyds http ://boydsgunstocks.com/ and Richards Microfit Gun stocks http ://www.rifle-stocks.com make inexpensive makes thumbhole laminate target stocks - but may be different than you are looking for.

I'd also suggest throwing a few rounds down range, I personally very much like the factory stock on the R700SS 5R milspec.
-BUT of course everyone has their own preference. I just meant to say the trigger imo. is a better place to put the first upgrades.

Buuut if you're looking to get accurate and competitive, biggest suggestion I could make would be picking up a Jewel trigger for it... swear to god it makes that rifle work off telekinesis... I 'think' shoot, and it does.

Stocks optimized for prone shooting tend to have a grip that is more vertical, and a cheek piece that places you in better alignment with the scope in the prone position. Scopes sit further forward (generally) on prone-rifles too.

Examples of a prone-type stock would include:

Obtunded, would it be possible to get a side view picture of one of the rifles you shoot prone with? I want to see where your eye piece sits in relation to your grip.

I've been having a problem with comfort with my shooting. I feel cramped up and hunched onto the rifle. I think after reading your post that my scope may be too far back...

Robertf, I'm kinda in the same boat. I'm thinking of getting a B&C 2094. Likely get it before this HST crap arrives.
