A smart person would select a rifle over a shotgun. Although you're right, the animal/target in question won't know the difference. What makes the difference is whether or not the projectile reaches its intended target.. A rifle is a far better option.

My Rem 870 would be my first choice (both of them actually, as one can be used as parts for the other in the unlikely event that it breaks. My SKS would be a close runner up, but since the SKS is a "rifle", and the 870 ain't ... Then it's SKS all the way .... Maybe my Mosin (both of them, again, same reason as the 870's) but I have less ammo kicking around for those at any given time.
 
damnit, why did i sell my XCRf:P:

i guess i will take the gun i have the most ammo for, so that narrows it down to my 10/22 that has a leupold vx-I 2-7x32 mounted and my german entrenching tool for backup:(

anyone wanna bring a spare AR15 with them so i can trade you a german entrenching tool for it:)

Shot placement and penetration are what counts. 5.7x28 probably doesn't have much barrier penetration, but its ample enough to be deadly in the right hands on soft tissue targets. A hole is a hole. JTF2 probably wouldn't use it if all it does is hurt bad guys, but im sure you would know more then they do :p

And as for the OP's question, guess it would be my AK 47, seeing as how its my only rifle!
 
Depending where I am would dictate which rifle I would choose.

If I was in a urban environment it would be my RA XCR-L in 223 with as many LAR mags that I could stuff in my pack/pockets.

If I was in a rural environment I'd probably grab my Rem 700 LSS in 300RUM or my Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM may have to stop a dump truck... :D
