pros and cons of tube or clip feed

In my opinion the tubes are a pain there probably is not that much difference in terms of loading the tube or clip but a clip is way easier to unload and be taken out of the gun and inserted back in whenever you need to

Sounds like your looking for a "truck gun". You will definitely want a detachable "clip" for that.

I'am thinkin several detachable mags so you can keep up a sustained rate of fire out in the gopher patch.

Tubes guns are a PITA They always seem to end up pointing right at ya at some point of the reloading process.

Aside from the Ruger 10/22 with its flush 10 round mag, tube feed avoids a mag sticking out the bottom. That's about all I can think of for advantages. Some of the old tube feed repeaters allowed loading with shorts, long and long rifle ammo.

You guys are very helpful! I give this forum an A+ , only been on for a short time but you guys are aces. Glad to have finally found someone that enjoy's the sport as much as I do and knows a little more! Yes i'm looking for a "truck" gun , hunting varmints or the occasional pop can.

here are my two options , springfield model 87(tube)-175$ or cooey model 64 with scope(clip)180$. Both are in good shape!

what do you guys think.

I'll x2 that tube fed rimfires can be a pain in the butt. The only advantage I can think of is that they usually hold quite a few rounds (mine holds 14).

Loading and unloading is awkward, it's easy to accidentally drop one in backwards and not notice until it jams up the works. You also have to be very careful about muzzle control when you load/unload. I usually drop a lot of rounds on the ground trying to load mine (it loads from the stock).

For a truck gun, with lots of unloading/loading etc, I'd definitely pick the mag fed rifle. Just try loading/unloading a tube fed rifle a couple of times and it will get old real quick.

sorry guys had too :D

The cooey 64 is a good gun. I had one that was called a 64B.

I think there's a Marlin semi auto 22 and a lot of guys like, and it might cost less than the prices you are quoting here for used guns. Of course it wouldn't come with a scope, but I have no idea of the quality of scope you are getting with the guns you are looking at.

have to disagree with you dax. wouldnt swap my beaten up tube fed henry for any other 22 rifle. oh, and wasnt the op talking about 22? shotgun? well, different story but im sure your find some ladys and gents who disagree about "tube feeds suck"

Tube feed is ok in my opinion. Load with action open, most have a slot in tube so you can't load a shell backwards. To unload, open action, remove mag tube dump the shells in your hand or on the ground. I love my 9422. Removable mag is easier if getting in and out of truck etc. That is why I have a 1022 too.
