168 BTHP versus 168 AMAX .308 win

Anyone want to take a crack at this question?

Which bullet design in your opinion performs better accuracy in a .308 win loading?

Will let you know in a month. Will be trying all in 308 and 3006 with my chrony. I have located factory Hornady match to compare. Should interesting

Match BTHP's seem more readily available these days. I'm curious on the AMAX, too, though. Might be the new zombie-grenade I've been looking for... :D

The truth is I 'm also looking into it for that reason. I'm just trying to standardize my loads and be multifunctional at the same time. I know that the AMAX is used for thin skinned animals and large varmints. I personally use 165 Nosler Ballistic Tips for my deer work but I have known a few hunters who have used AMAX on deer successfully. Most of the time I will be using them for 200-800 meter precision/sniper matches.

If you're using them out to 800M wouldn't the 155's be better? I think you'd get slightly higher velocity at a slightly higher BC and out at 800 the 308 needs all the help it can get. I found the 155AMax's over 46gr Varget give very good accuracy out to 300yds.

I have shot the 168gr, AMAX's and 178gr. AMAX's out of my Rem 700P and they are stellar! They seem to outperform the SMK's that are usually my favorite. My rifle has a distinct liking for these two AMAX's.

With SMK and proper loads I can get .5-.75 MOA out to 300 yards if I do my part. The AMAX's perform just as good, I have had many sub .5MOA groups with them out to the same range. They group better, with the SMK's I seem to always get a flyer or two. Perhaps it is just me and my shooting, but the AMAX's do perform admirably.

Gushulak, I found the same thing with 2 308's, the Hornady's performed SLIGHTLY better than the SMK. I originally bought the Hornadys with the idea of saving some $ instead of using the SMKs. I was surprized that the Horn performed better, at least for me.

I have used both 168 Amax and 168 HPBT... switched to 155 AMax and they seemed much flater shooting then the 168 Amax

First ever 10 shot group with 155 max measured out at 8 1/4" at 600 yards on a windy day 20-30km/h

I have a tone of 168 Amax instock they shipped me way to many and a few 155 Amax You'd better buy some before I end up shooting all the stock. I am going thru about 100 a weekend :)

I'm feeling the love for AMAX. It seems that they cost a bit less on average than the usual HPBTs I buy from Nosler, Speer, SMK or even Hornady. Time to get crackin' on developing a load with the 168 and 155 AMAXs.

Thanks guys :).

Each rifle seems to have a preferenec. Trick is to find it before the barerl is shot out. Try both and see which works best.

But if you are shooting long range, the 168 Sierra is a dog. The 155 of either flavour is much better at long range. And you have a short barrel.

I get 3050 fps out of my 32" barrel.

By "168 BTHP" do you mean specifically the Hornady 168 BTHP, or any one of the various 168s out there (Sierra etc)?

The Hornady 168 BTHP has a bit more drag than the Hornady 168 AMax. All other things being equal, you're likely to find an accurate load with the 168BTHP sooner, the AMax can be a bit fussier to set up well.

If you need to load to magazine length, the 168 BTHP has a better chance of shooting well than the AMax (but in the end you have to test to make sure; I'd try the BTHP first though).
