I'm a little bored tonight so I thought I would show you guys a simple project I've been working on.
I picked up a 60's vintage Winchester Cooey 750 a few years ago for $50 which was in pretty good shape except for the usual Cooey brown bolt syndrome. After recieving an E-mail from my good friend and fellow CGN'er, Spacesaver, showing me his Cooey 750 project I decided to try some simple home smithing for myself.
Here she is as I bought her:

So far I have cut the barrel down to just over 18" and given it a simple straight crown.Polished the bolt and trigger blade.Smoothed out the reviever internals. Drilled and tapped for a Weaver 60a scope mount.Re-cut the fore end of the stock(I think it looks better). And currently I'm working on reducing the trigger pull a little at a time, the original trigger set up almost needed two fingers to pull.
Here she is now(I'm still thinking about the 8 ball!):

Also added a second action screw infront of the trigger guard to stabilize things.

I will re-finish the metal and wood as soon I'm happy with the trigger.

Is it just a trick of the camera or is the bore visibly off-centre at the muzzle?

(I know it's not that uncommon, I've just never noticed it before)

Yes it is off centre.High and off to one side.I think it is due to how the barrel was tapered more than the machining of the bore.

Nice project. Looking forward to a range report. I've been able to tune my Cooey 60 triggers down to about 2lbs with very little creep.

Nice work, looks really well done! What is the advantage of the shortened barrel though? I've seen a few guys recently shorten barrel length on .22 cal's. Does it increase velocity?

Some ppl say that anything over 12-16" actually causes the bullet to start slowing in the barrel but I don't know. It does stiffen the barrel though and it looks the dogs bollox!

How'd you cut the barrel down?
I'm lucky to have a friend with a lathe.

Looks just like the set-up I did. Not as nice a scope but the bore was very similar to yours. seemed off centre too...but once the scope was set, look out gophers.
The scope is a cheap Tasco varmint but for $100 I'm very impressed.Even with the offset barrel this is proving to be a very good shooter.25m groups are one hole and 50m is down to about an inch after a bit of trigger work and I think they will get better as I work on the trigger pull.
