newbie "black rifle" retractable stock question

I'm new at all this black rifle retractable stock stuff. I see that there is "commercial" and "mil spec". What are the differences between the two? Is one better than the other? I see lots of different adapters, adapters for adapters..confuses me. Can you guys shed the light on me here. I would like to know before I go and buy adapters and stocks that dont fit or go together.

For all intents and purposes it really does not matter which size you use. Just make sure you have the right stock for your tube diameter. I think the milspec size is more popular and comes on the higher end AR's.
 
Seeing there is a diff on the buffer tube where it screws into the lower rec'r...... does this mean that the Mil spec is a tighter fit? Is there a lil bit of play when running "commercial"?

If you have a milspec tube you buy a milspec stock...
if you have a commercial tube your buy a commericial stock..

You don't mix and match.. You have a commercial and you want a mil spec you need to buy both stock & tube..

commercial is extruded, milspec is forged/machined..
 
Ok... I'll bite. For a mil-based firearm one big benefit is supposed to be the standardization of parts. So what was the driver that let to a 'commercial' buffer tube on the AR's.

To my knowledge there is no other base parts on an AR that are commercial, add ons like rails yes, but not to the base functional structure of the firearm.

So why the buffer tube? And why such a nomimal, almost inconsequential way?

Cost.. the commercial tube is just that extruded aluminum (about $35)..
the milspec tube is machined forged stock (about $80)
