A 35Whelen is a very good suggestion, but I doubt very much that you would get less recoil (in identical rifles) using heavier bullets at full loads.

For moose, it would be hard to beat the Whelen loaded with a 250gr bullet.

No, I haven't, I'm too heavily invested in the .375 and to me there is not enough separating them to justify owning both. To me the .375 is the top choice for a medium bore, but the 9.3 is interesting, with a good variety of good bullets to choose from, and coming close to .375 performance in the field if not in the ballistics tables. Think of it as a .375 with manners, something the big case .375s lack. If I came across a nice Brno or prewar Mauser in 9.3X62, it would be difficult to pass it up, (although I'm sure the price would be a useful deterrent) but I don't need or really want one.
 
I sighted in my T3 .338 Federal recently...a wood stocked lite std recoil pad...with 225 gr. speers...more noticeable recoil than my 10 lb target rifle but not punishing...and that from prone with a tripod...with hunting conditions shooting from standing I don't think you'd register a difference between it and a .270.
 
I shoot a Ruger Frontier in 338 fed as my primary hunter out here in BC and I would highly recommend this caliber. It provides me with clean kills, good accuracy and minimal recoil but shoots rich at about $3 per cartridge. I have had no problems with accuracy between 50-300 yards and have no experience beyond that. I say buy it ! With more people shooting it, availability of ammo will increase and lower the price. :) I feel confident hunting with it against anything the province has to offer.
 
By the posts here, the .338Fed is good, just not in a T3...:D

I've been shooting my 760 with 200gr and 225gr Interlocks, and I don't find the recoil bad at all. And my rifle has NO butt pad...;)

VXII 2-7 would be a nice fit on there...
 
for me, the 338 fed offers NO improvement over the 308.06/whaatever- the 338 win mag does, in spades- and if you are not a fan of recoil, shoot the pussy 225 grainer loads- esp the factory stuff- or lighter- where the win mag really starts to shine is the 250 grain "hunting " load, and the 275s which aren't made anymore , were the "ideal" weight for anything

why shoot a 338 win mag when you can shoot a 340 Wby Mag or 338 Ultra? :) 338 Lapua........338-378 Wby............all sorts of IMPROVEMENTS over a 338 Win Mag, if you base a cartridge's effectiveness on velocity.......which it seems - you do ;)

there comes a point where the increase in velocity doesn't justify the increase in powder consumption- that happens when you go from 338 win mag to 340 weatherby
 
I had my eye on one for sale for a good price at Ellwood Epps and now it's sold. Wouldn't be you any chance that has it now... Would it ? :D
