Newb question about AR handguards

OK, this might be a stupid question but what length handguards would I need for a 14.5" barrel if I want them to extend past the front sight post? ( I know I would need to replace the gas block) I'm asking because all the handguards I see are listed as either carbine, mid length or rifle length. Do I just order a midlength handguard and I'm good?
 
If by handguards you mean a free floating rail and you are installing a low pro gas block the length of your rail could be what ever you want. I believe that carbine is 7", mid would be 9" and rifle is something like 12" or 13", it just depends on how much barrel you want to see.
 
yeah, I guess it does have to be a free float rail right? I don't actually have the gun, I'm just buying stuff for my Norinco when it gets here in June.

I have a 14.5 Noveske Afghan with a Larue 10 inch free float rail. I really like the look. Like a previous poster stated its all about how much barrel you want exposed. Is weight a consideration? What do you intend on mounting? etc etc
 
Heres some pics to put this into perspective, this is a 16" rig with a 12" FF Troy rail...

For a 14.5" barrel I recommend a 10" rail, it will look great, good rail to barrel ratio, Good Luck

Looks like crap.. :p

I'm thinking about getting one of those grips though, find myself with way too much trigger finger with the standard grip. Where did you get yours?

I get pretty much all my magpul stuff from brownells, well most of it anyway, you can get rail panels, ctr, moe everything, maid, mbus, bad, asap, afg, ms2, enhanced triggerguard, xtm panel, ranger plate, ctr cheek riser, grip cores, recoil pads, etc. etc.

It always comes out cheaper from them as apposed to buying locally. But it's not just about price it's about service. They keep tons of inventory, and if it's sold out just submit a backorder order, and it shows up in 2-3 weeks... being that I'm a huge magpul slut it works for me... I've also purchased tons of other stuff from them for my other gear aswell, ie glock, tps scope rings, eotech risers, scope mounts, swivels etc. etc.
