XCR or Mini 14

One plus for the XCR is cheaper mags (easy to find) and 10 rounds mags.

Minus for the Mini 14 is expensive (harder to find) mags and only 5 rounds.

Not to mention the fact that flush-fitting 5 round Mini 14 magazines (the ones that are relatively easy to find) are very difficult to remove from the rifle for reloading, as they rock into the magazine well to lock in place and there is no extra length for leverage.

Not entirely accurate. I had to check my Mini to confirm, but the mag springs right into your hand when you activate the mag release lever. That requires no effort whatsoever. Inserting a five rounder takes about three minutes practice to get the angle correct. After that, no issues at all. I think we need a sticky entitled "Mini 14 myths and mysteries".

They're easy to remove though. When you push and hold the release, they fall out like an en-bloc clip...

The Mini 14s are versatile rifles, and have lots of neat and useful accessories, but the lack of 5/30 round mags is rather annoying.

Didn't Ruger make a rifle called the XCR briefly back around the early 1980s? I remember the RUC were thinking of buying it, I remember seeing one once in a gunshop in the UK. Basically a 7.62 version of the Mini-14, I think the one I saw was an ex-trial gun because they were asking silly money for it.

At which point you say to yourself, "hmm, isn't the Mini-14 a 5.56mm version of a 7.62mm rifle?"

Ah yes, but the XCR (or whatever it was called, I think it was the XCR) had the added bonus that it didn't work.

XGI.
Given that Ruger never released any, becasue they were not able to work out inherent problems, a prototype gun that got loose would be an extremely rare collectible.

Yeah, it was, it was at Pat Walker Guns as I recall, long since defunct (I think he was busted for securing firearms insecurely). As I very dimly recall he wanted £1,700 for it which was a ton of money back then. Not exactly cheap now.

I have a feeling it ended up in the hands of LEI as I recall him (Greg) mentioning those things to me at one point, they're the company with the L129A1 LMT sniper rifle contract. Or maybe he just handled it, long time ago now, my memory is pretty rusty on the details, couldn't even get the name right.

i used a 6.8 mini for hunting deer on vancouver island. the 6.8 is a true one shot one kill round. as per my mini, sold it. it would not shot to the level a hunting rifle should. i run a 3x9 vx1 and the only good part was the scope. i have owned about ten mini's and was let down with the 6.8. still have one s/s factory folder as my wife love to shot it.

Unless your Garand is real hinky, the en-bloc clip should fling out the top of the rifle after you fire the last round. Pretty much exactly the opposite of the Mini's magazine.

Are the short barreled tactical mini 14's restricted?

Yep, unfortunately a 16.12" barrel on a centerfire semi-auto = restricted. :(
