Strongest AR-15 stock: Magpul UBR vs ACE M4

It seems that one of the weak point on an AR is the receiver extension (buffer tube) that can bind under abuse.

For a while I've been looking for an ACE M4 stock as it's advertised as the strongest receiver extension. Fabsport is back-order.

However I see that the UBR also use it's specific buffer tube and it looks beefy.

On Google I didn't find any comparison. Do you know where I could find that info? Any experience on this issue?

Thank you!

I'm not sure if the UBR was included, but the Vltor Emod was the only stock that past the USMC drop test. I'm having heck of a hard time finding a Emod up here in Canada. Might have to go for a UBR.

If you're binding the bolt due to 'abuse' on the buffer tube, you belong in a zoo.

I love my UBR - in all seriousness, what in the hell do you use your AR stock for? Or do you just want the 'strongest' so you can say 'it's the strongest'?

Unless you're butt-stroking crowds of hundred of G8 protesting hippies, I would guess you'll never bend/break/bind your buffer tube with range use.

Personally I think the ACE stock is uncomfortable and looks like arse. But that's just me!

The EMod use a mil-spec buffer tube. There's no reason why it would resist binding more than any collapsable.
I guess your drop test was for testing the "stock" part and not the receiver extension binding.
The buffer tube binding is a major malfunction compared to a "stock" damage that still shoots.

I want my guns to be as rugged as I'm. You're right that I won't have any problem on the range. But if someday it becomes non-restricted, I'll bring it in the wood. I has to resist if I fall on it or it fall down the stand.

Even plinking I can dive in the dirt or do a little butt-strike. In the army we were told to avoid hitting anything with the A2 stock.

I've seen a C8A3 bent in the middle because it was stuck in a LAV turret that was traversing. The upper receiver was litterally split in the middle and the rear takedown pin hole was sheared off and the buffer tube was still serviceable.

The only time I've ever seen a broken buffer tube was from weapons that were blown up by IEDs.

Keep your money. Unless you expect to be blown up on your way to the range.

OK. I've been carrying (that's right carrying not plinking) that gun for a decade now. I have used it, abused it, gotten it wet, gotten it covered in mud, buried it, shot it while full of sand, and used it as a hammer.

I have never once bent, warped, or otherwise damaged a buffer tube or whatever I had mounted to it.

Get yourself an VLTOR for a Magpul CTR and call it a day.

Sorry, I forgot. The assh^&es in the army that told you to avoid hitting things with the A2 stock are the same types that tell you that the drain hole in the buffer tube is for laser boresighting......Or that Mattel toys makes the furniture.

They were raised on the FN and then stopped learning......welcome to the now

K, I'm done...sorry

So by extension if you had a wussy gun then that would make you a wuss? People are weird is all I can say. :runaway:

Just sayin'.

Thanks for the serious input.
Probably I should try to handle both ACE and UBR.

To those who don't care about their gun quality, you can buy yourself a Norinco and I won't insult you.

As others have mentioned, unless you're prone to breaking down doors with your AR it's a non-issue.

Having said that, if you want an ACE, go for it, but have a look at this pic:

Many ACE owners report stripping the grooves on the RET. I did on mine. ACE was not helpful. ACE uses this language on their website: "The Ace Socom Stock is designed and intended for calibers up to and including 7.62x39. Use on weapons of higher calibers such as, but not limited to: 12 Gauge Shotgun, .450 Bushmaster, 458 Socom, .499LWRC, .50 Beowulf, .50 BMG may cause damage to your stock that will not be covered by warranty."

Since a regular stock works just fine with all the listed calibers, the M4 must be less robust than a regular stock.

Sounds like your more worried about the buffer tube then the stock itself. Buy any high end buffer tube (BCM, LMT, Colt, etc.) and call it a day. You'll have peace of mind knowing the tube is of high quality and brand name. In terms of stock, I don't think you should rule out the new Magpul ACS I just got one and dig it, the only stock I'll use going forward. Good Luck

Magpul's UBR and ACS where not in the USMC drop test.

The ACE stock is ASS IMHO.

I do find the ACS and UBR's bulky on an M4 though, UBR is nice on a 16" and longer 5.56mm, and I love the ACS on the SR-25 EMC...

Thanks everyone.

I actually have a Magpul CTR. It's fine but the cheek-rest isn't my favorite and as you understood, I'm concerned about the tube stiffness.

UBR vs M4: it's a lot harder to find a bad review on the UBR. It's tube and tube attachment (to receiver) looks as sturdy. Let's shop for a UBR!
