I've seen sevrals posts and treads about the new Savage Edge wich were mostly positive, althought I have to say I like the price most... (leBaron has it at 319$ and 399$ with scope)

So I am seriously considering in 30-06 as a Deer/moose gun

But does anyone has any idea of how good the scope actually is? I mean I an considering it first and foremost because it's cheap so I am not expecting the world for 80$ but then again if you keep the 80$ mark up for the scope can I find a better one for the money?

Personally I have seen two Savage scopes fail on their other combo packages.
And I know I'm not the only one, so I'm not sure how these ones would be.

So if it was my money I would get the rifle without the scope, and buy my own scope.
Then again I like the look of the XP camo, and having it come already with the mounts and rings would be worth the slight extra right there IMHO.

BTW thanx for the heads up as to who is selling these. :)

I can't say what scope is being used on the Edge but my brother-in-law bought one of the Savage 116 packages and it came with a Simmons 8 point scope. A $50.00 value. His is still holding up on his 300 Win mag (only gets a couple of shots per year) and I have to say I am very surprised. He did have to change rings and bases (bases were undersized/couldn't tighten the rings to the bases) though.

Personally I would buy without the factory installed scope and buy a good quality scope (Leupold, Burris, Nikon etc) and good quality rings/bases (Leupold, Burris, etc).

Gotta agree with you on this, my bro-in-law bought a Savage package gun in .270 and after the first two boxes of ammo went downrange we couldn't keep it shooting straight. I had a used Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 I wasn't too fond of with some spare Leupy rings, he got some Leupold bases and a couple more boxes of ammo and next thing you know it's a close to MOA gun.

It'll cost a little more, but if you want peace of mind regarding your scope, then I'd recommend buying just the rifle, and mounting a bushnell 3200 (of your preferred magnification) with burris zee signature rings and weaver aluminum bases.

Can you point me at those threads? I have not seen any posts yet from people that actually own and have used the gun. I am sure they are out there some where. I've read reviews from reviewers but I like people better.

I have seen posts from people that have intimated they know a little about its production. Based on that and the fact that I would only save $1.79, I would still currently get a stevens 200.

I would also like to see some range reviews of the Edge. I've been thinking about buying the Stevens 200 for the last little bit because it's quite reasonably priced but if the Edge is everything its supposed to be I may reconsider.

Does anyone have any range reports? Info or opinions?

Cheers

Savage puts Simmons scopes on their packages. Simmons scopes are low end scopes. Serviceable, but not great.
"...can I find a better one for the money?..." Not for $80. Unless it's on sale. You get what you pay for.

The review I seen was favorable......not unlike the Stevens 200. for 319$ Im tempted to get one in 22-250 for the hell of it ......maybe even get it reamed to an AI chamber

Simmons Scope

for what it's worth: when I first came to Canada I had limited disposable income for guns. I bought a Savage package ( I think a 111) in 30-06. For a few years that was the only rifle I had and that's all I used hunting. The rig never let me down and I killed plenty of critters and reliably filled the freezer.

Once I could afford it I mounted a better scope (Zeiss) on that 30-06 and I bought more and more expensive guns. I still have the Simmons scope in a box; it's now my spare but it still works.

It's not a good scope, optically; you get what you pay for, but it works.

I still have and use the gun, it shoots extremely well.

Come to think of it, if I were rational about it, it's silly to have guns that are much more expensive ( thye don't shoot three times as good). More expensive optics are sure nice to have though if you hunt a lot and are serious about it; that's for mountain hunting especially.

I had a Stevens in 7mm08 for a while too and that was a great gun too.

Can't say anything about the Edge yet, but generally my experience with a Savage package, and with Savage in general, has been very good.

I've had a Canadian PAL for years.
I have recently acquired a Savage Edge Camo in .30-06 Sprng.
I'm going to try one of the newly resurrected Redfield (actually a Leupold 'bastard brand' roughly equivalent to the Bushnell Trophy line of scopes in features and quality) 3-9x40 scopes on it.
I think I'll have the Ellwood Epps people look at the trigger with view to getting it down into the 1.5 - 2 pound pull range.
Simmons and Tascos belong strictly in the low power rim-fire domain.
I'm not trusting anything from Bangladesh Optics for my yearly buck.;)

Bear in mind the Gunblast site couldn't ever possibly give a bad review about anything before you get a chance to handle one yourself.

The test rifles that manufacturers send to Gunblast are without a doubt in my mind pre-screened 'pick of the litter' examples.
