Shorty M1A, M14, M305 projects ...

the ultimak mounts to the barrel right? would the hurt how the gun shoots?

The Ultimak makes it shoot better - Because -

It has many strong mounting points on the barrel that stiffen the barrel, like a heavy barrel, for less whip.

It also acts like a heat sink to keep the barrel cool for les poi variation with hot barrel.

That looks like what I want to do to my new one. An 18.5 in barrel would be an excellent deer/elk gun here in the foothills of AB. Who did the work for you?

I'll play :D
troy mcs mk2, early m1a forged receiver, LRB medium 18.5" barrel, trw usgi bolt, and all usgi parts, crappy optic put on for pics hehehe

You've clearly seen a few M14 move across your desk. I'm current putting together parts for mine and am looking at the Troy for the base. In your opinion, and in retrospect, was it a good investment compared some of the other offerings like the JAE or Sage? Is it too heavy compared to others, or wood for that matter. I like the looks but am concerned that it may be too bulky for long walks in the woods.

And for barrel length I see a lot of lads cutting them down to the min. length, but performance wise what is the best length for the .308 round?

if you plan to hunt with your m14s....... forget any of the fancy metal stocks..... trust me..... been there done that with all three :D
now i see it this way...... I recommend the troy mcs MK1 as a sniper, prone/bench platform. JAE is a very nice customizeable stock...... but still not convinced it's worth the huge coin.
Sage..... it's very hard to not like a genuine sage and if i had to pick just one aluminum chassis stock for all purposes...... it would be the sage.

but for hunting...... nothing beats a 18.75 to 19" barrelled m14s in a fiberglass stock with a rubber buttpad...... in my humble opinion :D

I've talked to several rifle builders now, mostly bolt gun guys but as far as the .308 cartridge and what's the optimum barrel length? I've heard from several sources that 19" is the magic number for .308 but i'm not gonna stake my reputaion on that claim hehehe
I can hit what i'm aimin at with open sights to 300 yards with no problem and even with the shorter barrel, that bullet is still movin fast enough to get the job done if i do mine ;)

AWESOME ... I've had a shorty project planned for years ... acquired all the parts needed finally ... sending my rifle to M14Doctor and getting a barrel swapped out for a 18.5 job ... I'M SO HAPPY ... :D :D :D

This has probably been discussed but I'd like to understand more. I've read so far that cutting the length of the barrel to 18.5" has no marked effect on accuracy. Nor does it improve it other than aesthetics.

But there must be a reason why the barrel was designed to be that long in the first place. So if accuracy is not affected, what does one give up? Range? Maybe the load being used back then necessitates a longer barrel?

Thanks.

the rifle was originally designed so as to kill a man at 800 to 1000 yards
let's look at it this way......
some say cutting the barrel will have an averge affect on velocity equal to 25 ft per second per inch.... roughly.
so by cutting back the barrel by 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 inches from 22 to 18.5 we could safely assume a 100 foot per second velocity loss for any given round. reloaders may be able to speed her up a bit to compensate but i can't comment there as reloading is not my expertise.

In my opinion, inside 300 yards , the 18.5 inch barrel can be very accurate and in a battle condition where a man is the target, effectively accurate range would be possibly reduced to 600 yards maybe a bit more.

my take on the shorty

poly 2009 ,cut to 18.5 added a S&J cqb stock ,rail for light on left side,ARMS 18 mount ,Falcon 1.5/5 scope , and brake
