where do you shoot a skunk so it won't stink??

Catch and release is always funny, just open the live trap in front of a culvert, that way the skunk can leave and by the time it's on the other side of the culvert you're long gone.

There's a product called skunk off, it comes in a small white bottle with a skunk on it, it works incredibly well.

I would never consider drowning an animal unless in a survival situation. There are more humane ways to dispatch little critters. You may need some serious education in the moral department Fail Guy. Not tryin to pick a fight here but common, smartin the hell up. Please one hunter/outdoorsman to another, show some compassion to our furry friends.

I shot a lot of skunks when I was farming. I think hiting the spine is probably right. That makes a large rifle, or a shotgun a good choice as long as you don't puncture the sent sac when you do it.
I shot quite a few with the 30-30, and the 12 gauge. I think lack of spray was a bit better with the 30-30, but i always considered it just good luck when they didn't spray.
Picking up a skunk in a live trap, I used a rake to hook the handle, never had one spray from the trap, but they generally smell so bad, distance is good.

What mudbug said.

Back on track we go! The skunks that i have killed were most often done in with a 12 gauge. I only use full choked shotguns. (just my preference, have fun with whatever you like) I find it's not too hard to take them in the head with a blast from about 15 paces. Not too much head is left over after and i've only ever had 1 spray a teeny tiny bit. There are other methods i would consider using if i had one trapped but we won't get into those.

(Skunk in live trap) + (.22 LR to the head) = end of problem.

The skunk will back up to the far end of the cage, facing you as you approach from UPWIND. Just put the muzzle through the cage and shoot it in the head, and walk away.

Sometimes they spray...sometimes they don't, it only stinks for a little bit anyway.

Oh, and for your dog...get a product called "Odour-Mute", works great. :)

Well, that's your problem... 3/4" isn't enough wrench for a skunk! I use 1" at least and 25mm for European skunks...

Seriously?? EVERYONE knows that the only proper tool for skunk killing is a 3/4" Drive, 36" long Power Bar from Princess Auto. Anything less is too risky for proper penetration and terminal energy.

Really!!!??!! And you call yourselves gunnutz!!

LOL!!

Right in the bung hole with a 12 ga., from about 10 feet. It might stink, but the satisfaction of blasting one of those ugly, duck egg eating bloody things is worth the smell. By the way, from 10 feet, it matters not one bit about shot size, choke, brand of shell.... or anything else.:p

Strangely skunks seem to drown easily with little struggle. They just sort of swim around in the trap for a bit then expire. No thrashing or flailing about to speak of. Nothing like a squirrel for instance - only did that once and I'll admit the thrashing and fight was a bit unsettling. "Lead poisoning" for the tree rats ever since for me.

In Sherwood Park the county rents cages for something like $10. They come and pick them up with the skunk in it too. Call your county they may offer this. I had 8 living under my shed right in the middle of town, I like them-went right up to the mom and 7 babies and took video and pics- no problems...All of my neighbours got traps so I did too to look like I cared. No body caught one though and the skunks left and havnt been seen since - maybe they are smart????
