I have, right now-a very nice mint laminated stock Russian SKS,and while am planning to restock it[Choat dragunof] and install a williams firesight combination[can't use the existing open sights due to my eyes],neither of which will prevent me from returning the rifle to original condition-no holes drilled, nothing cut off.
The question is-if I like it-or I need to install a scope, and want to make some perminent alterations-I'm reluctant to do it on this SKS which is in pristine condition-so-what to look for? -I'm thinking along the lines of a new Norinco, which has no collector value.Would that be a good candidate?or should I be looking for an already hacked SKS?

how rare are sks's right now ?

it's not like your taking a pristine lee enfield out of the original wrapper , then cutting off 6 inches of the barrel with a hacksaw then sanding the wood and metal with 80 grit then painting the whole thing with tremclad in camo colours .

it your money your rifle , have fun .

besides in 20 or 30 years you will be creating a project for some one to " unbubba " your rifle , restoring to how is was the day you bought it .

if your really worried about hacking up the rifle , buy another one in pristine condition , lock it away and never touch it .

Let me get this right, you've got a rifle that's worth about the price of a couple pair of running shoes and you're concerned about ruining it? Not trying to be rude but do whatever you want to do to make it shoot for you, you got it for fun shooting, it's not an investment bond. If you were doing this to a Sako I'd say no but you're making a SKS more shootable. Are you thinking that if you make the mod's you'll drop the value of the rifle to the value of 1 pair of runners? Have fun with it.

PERSONALLY, if it were a nice SKS, I would offer it up in trade on the EE - maybe someone with one with a bung-ed up stock or a black bolt-refurb or whatever would work a deal out where you get a less collectible rifle and a couple bucks while they get the collector they wanted?

Or alternately, get a cheap Chinese SKS - lots of them around. Preferably opt for a Norinco marked less-collectible one, not a decent military marked one.
