1025 Yards- First time

Was out this weekend scouting for a long range location. My planned spot fell short in the distance and ease of access so on to a new area. After a fun afternoon of running around with a laser of serveral big hills I found a good spot for the time. Made a frame to hold some cardboard and off to the races..

Take a few shots, then walk to the road(.5km) drive 1.1km, then hike in .5km and check the targets-repeat

Measured 11" with the cold bore shot and 3 1/8" with just the three warm barrel shots! This was my third group of the day.

First only put one round on paper(glad for the huge target!) second was 24 1/4" or 11" without the cold bore( wish I didn't have to count those!) and the last group was 22" or a five shot 10 3/4" group without the cold bore. I did not allow for a cold bore shot on any of my groups yet but now know the the first shot will drop and land left of the rest by a fair bit. Didn't have the energy to run more Km than what I did up and down the hills but had a fun first day out. Hope to figure the wind out as I was first way right of the target, then left, then right again. Very hard to read the winds and no steady blows, just gusts for most of the day. Need a little something to meter the wind soon!

Was a fun day and learned just how hard it is to make a long distance shot! Hope to get better soon. I think I'm hooked:D :sniper:
 
Just to add was using Federal Gold Metal Match 175gr 308 out of a Savage PC10 20" barrel and a 20moa Farwell base, US optics rings and a Bushnell 4200 6x24x50 Tactical. Had a meter to test air temp/humidity and a Lecia 1200 Range finder(need a bigger one!) Used Isnipe on a Iphone to land the first group on paper without a proper zero, still zero'd for the 168gr stuff:redface: Had three- 4round groups and one 6 round group at the target before I tore it down and cleaned up. Was laughing when I saw how FAR 1025 yards is:cool: A great day!

Ha, I think you got an extra 1 1/2 hours of shooting over me:D I spent very little time on the trigger and most of it going up and down hills. A quad or better yet my old dual locker jeep would have been great! My little car is not an offroad item:(

Thanks guys! But I never even landed on my 8"x11" target. Was way right or left the whole time. Still lots of fun!
 
Get yourself some sticky hi-vis targets, the kind that go from black to fluorescent yellow when you hit them.


That way you can re-use your cardboard backer fairly often. ;)

Nicely done! The only advise I have to offer is that when you are shooting from a very hard surface like that rock outcrop, that you pad your bipod feet with a soft intervening material, a pair of gloves will work. I've found that I get less bounce and better groups doing this.
 
Great shooting! I have to say I am extremely impressed with the results from a factory gun shooting factory ammo! Holy Cow!!!

Please tell me you have no plans to start shooting F-Class! :D



this is also a good STFU for all the" 20" barrel is no good for 1000" experts out there.
 
Wow nice place to shoot is that close to your home? It makes me jealous as I'm looking at the brick wall out my window in Toronto lol, I guess it's time for a trip back to CFB Borden. Real nice shooting by the way.
 
Great stuff and welcome to the joy of LR shooting.

Since you have a rocky base that you shoot into, consider shooting rocks.

The pic with the target and your backpack shows a few very nice boulders right there. Of course, there are a bunch littered in the general area so move them to where your target is. Spray paint them a bright colour - shoot them

This way you can spot your misses quickly and adjust without the excercise. More time on trigger, more fun.

Thanks for the interest guys! Just keep in mind that was my best group of the day and it was still feet from where I was aiming(Need to learn how to read the wind)

firemachine69- I am too cheap for the fancy targets but I do like them. Wonder what kind of scope would show impacts at a 1000 yards?

warrenb- I am hurting after all the uphill/downhill stuff:( I need to get in better shape if I am going to do much of this!

Boomer- Thanks for the tip with the gloves. I didn't know it would affect my shots but good to know! I did notice how much I used my right elbow after resting on the rocks too;)

Obtunded- I think this rifle is that 1% of factory rifles you hear stories about. I am lucky to have one that works this good:D If I could afford to shoot F-class I would! Maybe after I start reloading and stop buying more toys. The 20" will get it done and I think a 18" would be enough to get to a 1000 yards too. Was happy to get on paper with mine on my first try! 4'x8' of cardboard helps;) Now to try get 1000m out of this spot next time I am there. I might have enough elevation to go just a little farther yet.

Workingspy- I have a 3 1/2 hour drive to get to this spot so not close to home but it does have a nice lake to camp at and a climbing cliff close by:D

Mysticplayer- Now you can see the parts working for me;) The rock idea was tried with a shot but I am still unable to judge the wind so I only get it on paper not on target yet. Will do when I can land the shots dead center. The 12" circle of rock I set up went untouched:( Lots to learn yet!

BC guy- Not this one!

Grizzlypeg- These are the adventures I like to try. Not so fun when I found my original area was too small for line of sight but worked out in the end:D
 
Not to take anything away from you but can you be 100% certain that the low shot is the first "cold bore shot"?

Believe me, at 1000yds and beyond a little (and I do mean little) less/extra shoulder than previous shots, or a little less/more cheek pressure can change the POI at least as much as you show or even more both above and below your mean point of impact.

These distance are really where a 100% consistent hold come into play.

Great shooting either way for your first time out to the 1000+ yd line.

Totally understand. There is alot of green in your area so kicking up dirt is not always easy.

Around here, the hills are very sandy so you just aim at the hill and see where the bullet lands. Use your mildot reticle to give you a very precise adjustment point and dial or move the reticle.

We can be within min of boulder in a couple of shots.

On your travels in, can you flag the tops of some trees?

If you can tell what the wind is doing, your hit ratio will go ballistic.

Keep at it and have lots of fun

get yourself a nice, high magnification spotting scope .. and you might .. be able to see your hits on paper/cardboard

CyaN1de- I am not a consistent shooter but on the second and fourth groups I had a single shot in each group that was down and left from the rest as well. I assumed this was a cold bore thing that didn't show at closer ranges. It might be me or the rifle settling in after the first shot too. I would set up, load, dry fire a few times, then run a mag of 4 rounds, pack up and hike etc then come back, set up and shoot again. I will need to spend way more time with this rifle but on my old 223 the first shot was always a little off from the warm barrel shots. I still need to learn a whole lot more so I do appriciate the comments and hints on what to pay attention to.

mysticplayer- Can you see me trying to get to the top of some trees to tie a flag on, that might be a story in itself:D Would that still be a valid indicator if the trees are aprox 200 ft below the path of the bullet at the mid point(500 yards)? I will need a spotter/shooting partner to go hunting for random boulders as I cannot get on target fast enough after a shot to spot hits on the granite rock. Not sure if that would show like in a sand gravel hill? Was a fun time regardless of my missed shot at the boulder. As I get better I might go try that again;)
