i'm having a minor feed issue with my bushmaster m4.

when i insert the magazine and hit the bolt release button the first round always jams. it usually chambers after i play around with the charging handle.

after that the rest of the magazine feeds perfectly fine.

when i first bought it the rifle chambered the first round no problem. but after i took it to the range the first time and brought it home and field stripped it and cleaned it the problem started.

maybe i didnt put it together right? has this happened to anyone else? if so were you able to fix it?

i looked for threads on this but was unsuccessful.

thanks in advanced

I have a 5/30 and a 10 round LAR mag. does it with both.

its weird how it only happens on the first shot. and every shot there after cycles fine.

and I've tried only loading 3 shots and same stuff. jam's on the first one but fine after.

Does it happen with different mags or just the one mag?

is this happening when standing and firing or on a bench? if the mag is resting on something this could be an issue. if not put more lube to it. maybe it is still just breaking in.

It does it regardless of shooting position. The thing that throws me through a loop is that the first time i used it(before i dissembled it) it didn't do it.

I'm sure its something dumb and easy to fix but its pretty frustrating when you're out at the range with it.

Thanks for the quick responses

does it happen only if you hit the bolt realease? or if you rack it as well?

that's the thing. Some of the times when you rack it it'll load the round right. but some times it won't. but it seems like 100% of the time when you hit the bolt release bottom it won't load.

do you think it could be a break in issue?

Load up both mags to full capacity.
Leave them for a week or two fully loaded (or until you go out to the range again).

Perform reloads from bolt release and charging handle.
See if problem still persists.

If so try a new mainspring.

Hi:

Can you take some pictures when the first round jammed? Just take the upper receiver off and take some pictures from underneath and ejecting port views will be helpful.

Thank you.

Springs do not wear from being compressed. They wear from being cycled.

I was thinking more of incorrect spring or spring out of specification.
Given the abundance of "lowest cost wins contract" the chance of this occuring increases as one of the first cost cutting measures is the QC procedure.

I had this problem with my Dlask, and have seen 2 Bushmasters with this problem. The issue with these three was the spring and pin that hold the buffer tube inside the butt stock not being seated properly. As soon as this was remedied, the rifles functioned perfectly. Good luck.

:agree:
Check to make sure that the spring detent is seated properly against the buffer tube & buffer assembly. Then also tighten up the mag release button to ensure that the mag seats properly in the mag well.
