I was wondering if anyone even sold JHP ammo for pistols in Canada, but I managed to find a few places online that were "sold out" of the stuff. Have rules changed on importing it? Does anyone know of a dealer that has JHP ammo in stock or might be getting some soon? Thanks.

It is legal to sell, buy and possess hollow point handgun ammo in Canada. It is expensive so not too many dealers carry it, it seems. And those that do carry it, seem to get it in in relatively small quantities and seem to sell out quickly. :( I have found generic Winchester JHP handgun ammo at Wholesale Sports, but P&D in Edmonton usually seems to have a decent supply of HPs in most handgun calibers.

Al flaherty's has some 9mm hp ammo I was pleased to see! It is not cheap, 18 bucks per box of 20, but I bought a couple just to encourage them to stock more. You have to vote with your wallet!

Its sometimes used in rifles for hunting. Some stores (SIR Winnipeg) hassle you and won't sell it to you if you can't convince them you plan to use it in a rifle. I ran into that when I had a 44 mag carbine.

Just out of curiosity. Why do people want to get their hands on jhp ammo?

HP ammunition is safer and better.

Generally speaking, high-quality HP projectiles are less likely to ricochet (and go somewhere other than where you intended them to go, thus potentially endangering someone or something).

Generally speaking, high-quality HP projectiles tend to dump more energy into the target, maximizing the chance that the bullet will stay in the target, and are less likely to over-penetrate (and go through your target, thus potentially endangering something beyond your target).

Generally speaking, high-quality HP projectiles are capable of better accuracy than other projectiles and are more likely to strike your target at the intended mark (and less likely to exhibit poor accuracy, thus not endangering someone or something that is off the mark.

Why would anyone not want to use such a superior projectile?

i guess being Canadian means we are not allowed to make our own decisions?

I buy them to make other people at the ammo counter uncomfortable. I wait until there's 5-10 people there in line, a few with little children, then I ask for whatever JHP I see on the shelf. Even if it's in a caliber I don't own. Once I get them I look at them with a squinting grimace on my face and say in a raspy voice, "Yeah, these'll do just fine."

I want to make everyone's day a little more memorable.

Again, why not. Just because we can't get ATC doesn't mean I don't want HP ammo in my home as personal protection. I don't buy a ton of it to waste on paper, just a few boxes that I keep on hand. Just because I am Canadian doesn't mean I have to throw up my arms and let someone do whatever they want to my family and home....I'll deal with any legal issues after the fact.

personal protection from?... zombie attack? Or is the guy busting into your house to murder you going to give you a sec so you can grab your legally stored handgun, unlock it and load it before he gets you? I've never understood guns for PD in Canada.

The odds of a perfect PD situation where you're not going to end up in jail is so ridiculously low, why risk using gun? Just use a nice big knife....

As for HP it being safer, well, majority of handguns are shot at ranges which should be safe for regular ammo. If you're creating dangerous ricochets, then either you or the range is not being safe.

You've never understood it? It must not be a good idea then!

Think about the things you say before saying them.

Why such a defeatist attitude?

You do as you see fit. Others will do what they're legally allowed to.

A trapper friend of mine is allowed to carry on his trap line and he uses a 357 mag with 110 gr. semi-jacketed- HP. He tells me that a snared black bear drops immediately with a shot from the 357 at a range of about ten feet. He aims for the heart and not the head. He claims that a head shot from the front will ricochet of the bear's thick forehead bones and only knock him out for a few minutes.
