Steven's 200 in .308Win

I bought a 6-24x50mm Fitco scope off ebay.

$53 to my mail box, arrived in 30 hours.

I know it doesn't move the group exactly 1" every 4 clicks @ 100yds, but it holds its adjustment and seems ok with some banging around in the truck and cranking on the objective end to get into focus quick. Doesn't seem to move around while adjusting power level either. While hardly much of a recoil its got 150 or so shots on the 22-250.

Ive had a BSA, and two different Bushnells on this rifle and its just as accurate as ever with the cheap scope.

I guarantee that a $50 scope will not be accurate. Sorry to be so forward.

I shot <1" (.993) with an SL8 in .223 and a $30 airsoft scope. It made it out twice to the range and was shooting that consistently.

I know this is in a precision rifle forum, probably best for the hunting forums, but...

My shooting buds and I had this discussion a lot. How much do you need to spend to get quality in a scope? What if all the low end scopes come from the same type of factories? If it's $150 or $50, or $30?

Anyway, so far from our EXPERIMENTS (not from our opinions) cheap scopes seem to work OK.

Not saying that I'd recommend them, but the poster above said he had 150 shots through his $50 scope and it was working well.

I too have experimented with cheap scopes.
So far I have gone through a Bushy Banner, 2 NCstar, and a leapers and ALL have failed on me after a few trips to the range.

Cheap scopes belong on rimfire of airsoft. And even rimfire I don't use anything cheaper than a Bushnell 3200.

There is a fine line between budget and garbage. All the money I spent on garbage scopes I coulda bought a couple decent, reliable scopes or one really high end one.

I agree on this definitely.

I have a stevens 200 in 300 win mag. I bedded it at home and tried to keep costs down by going with a bushnell trophy. I did a ton of reading on reliable yet not overly expensive scopes and decided the trophy was a good bet. I have yet to shoot the rifle though so this could end up being my lesson onn why not to buy cheaper scopes. I like the clarity though and honnestly cannot tell the difference between looking through it or my elite 3200.

I entirely agree with you. I just thought I'd gamble the $50 and see how it works.

Honestly, I'll be surprised if it makes it through this long weekend with ~360 4000fps loads and two ranches full of gophers, without a reticle falling off. I am taking a spare scope...

So far it just makes clover leaves at 100yds all day long. Seems quite appropriate on a Stevens 200. ;) Just ordered a Thumbhole stock from Boyds, and a SAV-1 trigger from Rifle Basix, when the scope lets go I'll look at getting a good one. Until then....

I don't know why some spend so much money to get a new stock and trigger, or even a barrel for that matter for a Stevens 200. At that point, why not just get a better gun?

I dig the 200 and am thinking of getting one in .308, but I'd bed it, stiffen forend with arrow shafts, do a trigger job and call it a day. To me thats a good rifle for the money, not the rifle +++++.

Scope is another matter.

Because some folks think that 400$ barrel attached to a 200$ action will shoot better than a 100$ barrel attached to a 500$ action.

Because a 400$ barrel attached to a 200$ action will probably shoot better than a 100$ barrel attached to a 500$ action.

I get that but now its a much more expensive stick. Just buy a better one in the first place.

I think the Stevens is a great deal, but I'd leave it be. Each to their own.

I am an avid shooter, but I am not aware of a factory gun that can out shoot a stevens build. Feel free to educate me.

Personally I'd use it for a cheap, good hunting rifle. Have no doubt it can make a great precision build too.

I said, each to their own.

Actually, please educate me. I did say I don't know why people would spend so much on a cheap rifle. I'm actually interested in your opinion on the matter.

Ok a savage build will cost around 1200. It will have a usable action, decent trigger, usable stock and a match barrel. It offers the highest level of mechanical accuracy at that price point. There are custom actions and blueprinted actions that a good gunsmith like guntech can build into a custom gun that will exceed the mechanical accuracy of a stevens build , but not at that the stevens price point. That is the appeal for many.

Ok a stevens build will cost around 1200. It will have a usable, but roughly finished action, decent trigger, usable stock and a match barrel. As far as I am aware it will outshoot any factory gun regardless of price.

So NO other parts changed except barrel, do a trigger job, bed & stiffen forend shoots better than any factory gun? No other parts swaps. If I have that correct than I see your point.
