Beginner's Shotgun

Hey everyone, thanks for all of your great advice and suggestions! I have been giving this an awful lot of thought, and almost forgetting that I started this thread  , I should clarify what I am after. I am most definitely not looking to start competitive skeet shooting, as I have never actually done it before, and my primary use would be for bird hunting. The skeet shooting would be mostly for fun and entertainment! To that end, I have decided to go with an O/U as like the look, and it would serve me very well for all of my purposes. I happen to have spied this lovely little deal on the EE http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=467791 and I am just wondering what you gents think of it!

I'd still probably go with an 870 to be honest, and then if you really like skeet and over/under style shotguns save your cash for a nice Browning/Beretta/Whatever.

I would run away from a cheap Russian over/under.

Also, that one is choked too tightly, and looks to be a magnum-weight gun. Not a good choice for upland hunting.

After you get the choke reamed out, it'll come to 500 plus. If you want an ou, look through the dealer ads up top, they often have nice used ones from 800 or so.

I just found a sauer royal 20ga fro 750.

Hey, if you're poor, just shoot an 870 or 500 like the rest of us. I couldn't afford a double until 2 years after I graduated and got my second job.

My Mossberg 500 disagrees with you.

I must belong to a gun club made up of only uptight snobs, because I have yet to see a pump on the skeet field. This being said, my choice of words may not have been the best. I am sure that pairs are possible with a pump, but more difficult than with a semi or over /under. And if it happens to be a windy day, where the second bird has a tail wind, difficult borders on impossible, especially if one is shooting international skeet. My point is that he said he want to shoot skeet. That being the case, a pump is far from the best choice for that application, especially for a beginner.

The OP said some skeet! No mention of international! Windy conditions can make doubles a little more difficult, but the 870 is not far from the best choice, and double are no where near to being or bordering on impossible. I am not suggesting that the 870 is the best choice but it is a reasonable choice, especially for an all round gun that would include upland and water birds. Yet to see a pump on the skeet field? You must not get around much or you may be right about that snob club thing?

The 870 is a good choice at a reasonable price.

If i could put my 5 cents worth, i have been shooting semiauto berettas all my life especially the older 302,303 models and let me tell you folks, there has never and will never be a more reliable shotgun in the world (my opinion of course) i have shot trap, skeet, sporting clays, ducks, geese, grouse, you name it and in all of those thousands of rounds probably only failed to eject twice. They are well balanced, reliable, and well priced if you can find any on here.....stu

if you do go with a pump may i sugest the browning pump in my opinion on par with the rem 870 wingmaster for 2-300 dollars cheaper i own one and absolutley love it i have owned a rem 870 express and it was ok but nothing on the BPS i did also buy a youth model 870 express in 20 guage for my wife and sons to use but the browning is mine

I am more of a rifleman but i have used my Browning Pump for the odd day on the clays and did fairley well with it, i have also dusted gophers tree squirrels upland bird, duck's geese and 1 deer and peace of mind when fishing near the river from bears.

i have been using a s x s for about 20 years now. i use it to shoot some skeet, grouse, ptarmigan, ducks, geese, you name it. i tried a pump gun at the time and i did not fancy it, but then again i was used to a single shot and the double seemed like the cats meow.
