I apologize for the length of this post. My AR15 odyssey was a long and strange one. Please bear with me.
After years of only caring about older guns, I finally had a chance to shoot an AR15 carbine about four years ago and decided that I wanted one. I bought myself a Bushmaster XM-15 with an A2 upper and left it at that. I liked the basic, unadorned style, but then, I joined Canadian Gun Nutz and saw the AR15s in this thread. Too many of them were insanely cool and I suddenly got jealous of the awesome. So I took my Bushmaster and added a carry handle mount, to which I mounted a simple Bariska red dot sight. I posted a pic of it about a year and a half ago, but here it is to refresh your memory.
After a while, it didn't seem to stack up to what you guys had, so I decided to overhaul it and pimp it within an inch of its life. I knew I needed an A3 upper if I wanted any real options when it comes to optics, so here was what I did.
A. Tacticool
1. I replaced the A2 upper receiver with a Stag Arms flattop.
2. Mounted a knock-off of an Eotech red/green dot sight and a flip-up rear sight.
3. Replaced the hand gaurds with a two-piece quad-rail set.
4. Mounted a tactical flashlight, cheap laser sight, and foregrip to the rails.
5. Got myself a double magazine clip, just to make it more "tactical."
This was the result:
I like it, I love it, it became the AR15 I knew I needed. But then it happened. It always does.
B. No School like the Old School
So, in the middle of overhauling my Bushmaster, I caught the AR Bug, and most of you know what I'm talking about. Considering how customizable it is, I knew one would not be enough. So I went back to the beginning. I wanted a "Vietnam" AR15, which proved to be fairly easy.
1. I got a 20" pre-A1 Colt upper, complete with triangular hand guards and lacking a forward assist and shell deflector.
2. Mounted it on a Rock River A2 lower.
3. Bought a bolt carrier assembly and charging handle.
Here it is:
In the interests of nostalgia and authenticity, I only use old steel 20-round magazines for it, and I did not bother with attachments. I thought about getting an older flash hider, but never got around to it.
C. Ladies' Night
So, around the time that the 'Nam AR is finishing up, I asked my girlfriend over dinner if she wanted me to build her the next one. She jokingly said yes, if it was pink. She should have watched what she said. I jumped right in without her knowing anything about it.
1. Simply, got a DPMS Sportical, complete.
2. Placed a riser mount on the upper receiver.
3. Used rattle cans (two shades of pink, one white) to camo it up.
4. Added the same Bariska dot sight that used to be on my Bushmaster.
And thar she blows:
She was surprised to say the least. She loves it and shoots it whenever she can. She's thinking about adding Barbie stickers to it.
D. Ghetto Blaster
After finishing my chick's AR15, I had heard of the Truck Gun, or (in American terms I think) a simple AR15 that truckers carry on the road to defend themselves. I was intrigued, as with as much driving as we do, thought that I could use one. I resolved to build a simple, no-frills workhorse.
1. Got a Double Star carbine upper.
2. Got the bolt carrier assembly and charging handle.
3. Mounted it all on a Cavalry Arms Coyote Brown lower.
4. Mounted a simple A2 stand alone rear sight.
And behind door number three:
In the interests of keeping it as compact as possible, I left off any attachments and only use 20-round Bushmaster magazines. This goes with us whenever we travel. I call it my Ghetto AR because it's fairly Spartan.
E. For Members Only
It was an eight-month gap between the Ghetto AR and this one. I got tired of not making one and started this project. I decided I needed another rifle, what with three carbines already. I also thought to give it some personality, you know, to make it different.
1. Got a Double Star 20" flattop upper, and this one came with the detachable carry handle, front sight, and bolt carrier assembly for dirt cheap.
2. Bought a cheap Hesse Arms A2 lower.
3. Used a carry handle mount to place a tactical scope.
4. Switched out the furniture with an OD green set.
5. Got an OD green plastic magazine, just for uniformity.
6. Just to make a statement, I placed a "2010 NRA Member" sticker on the buttstock.
Here's Johnny:
So there is my collection. I think I might be finished with it. I can't think of any other AR15s I need, so for now, that's it. But in a few months, I might change my mind. Thank you for reading.
