30-06 enough for moose?

Everything told, 7.62x39 is as useful as the 30-30 but not more so to any degree that matters in hunting terms. "vastly" or "greatly" are not words that anyone is ever gonna use when they describe the 7.62 commie because it's just not vast or great.

But hey - it's cool that you "feel" like it's better. That means something, to you at least. ;) After all, this is the internet, where having an opinion is just as good as knowing! :p

Best handle ive seen in a while!
FWIW, 7.62 is not any better than a 30-30. a spitzer moving that slow does less damage than a flat nose with a larger meplat going a little faster within its range. maybe 7.62 looks cooler from the neck up... but thats about it.

I'm sorry I even started this mess! Cause I'm not really a big fan of either one of these cartridges to begin with & this is getting so far of topic. I was going to start a big long post & get into ballistics v.s. terminal performance, but screw it! I'll leave this for others who actually moose hunt with either one of these cartridges. Your right, I'm wrong, I tap out....

as did I.

If you don't hunt with a magnum (like a real man) yer #### will fall off! :D

Sorry, I just cannot resist these discussions!

and remember, when hunting dirtpigs, one must dress as tacticool as possible. one should include combat rolls while shouting "hadji's in the bushes!".

;)

Don't you know that Moose have developed and evolved armor hides in the last 25 years?
You have to have a 300 mag to penetrate with any degree for a sure kill. The 30/06 and the 308 are old fashioned and are no longer effective against Moose.

My first moose was shot with a 30-30 by 9:00 the first morning. Last year I bought a 300 win mag and never seen a moose. Next year it's back to the 30-30. For me the 30-30 is a way better moose gun.

best 7.62x39 post so far!

The one thing where the 7.62 is better than the 30-30 is that it can match the 30-30 hunting effectiveness and with less recoil. That may sound like damning with faint praise, but in fact faster accurate follow-up shots are possible with a 7.62x39 than with a 30-30 in a light carbine.

Excellent video, the graphic representation really shows the relative hitting power from an entertaining perspective.

As much as I would hate to waste all that tasty watermelon, now I want to copy video and see how a soft point 7.62x39(rather than the fmj they tested) would compare to a 30-30 and .30-06. Hmmm, I bet I could get some very cheap or free over ripe watermelons from the sidewalk stalls in Chinatown...

I'd also like to see that! but my money would still be on the dirty thirty. logic would suggest that 300+ ft lbs more energy, faster velocity, and heavier bullet with a larger frontal area, equals more destructive fun.

I hunt with an M-14! Seriously though when's the next Toronto area clinic?

Jeff

Hungry here: don't wanna hijack from this thread of .30-06 fun, so I'll keep it down low. I'll be in Barrie once Jan 2011 rolls around. Too busy this summer with shooting season on the go right now. My M14 clinics take a back seat. Just did a Service CQB and another Service Rifle clinic in the past 2 months. So we are quite busy! Stay in touch. Barney

As he says in the vid...30/30 is using hunting bullets.
The AK is using FMJ.

Bullet construction and purpose is something to consider.

Try the same thing with a hunting bullet loaded in the 7.62x39...like a Barnes tsx for example, I'm pretty sure the results will be dramatic.

Also try another experiment of putting a 6x6 log in front of the watermelon and trying the original test again. At 100 yards at my range the berms catch my 30/30 hunting rounds...while the 7.62x39 from our SKS's sail through.
