HELP-Bringing in a scope back from the states???

You can legally import any scope into canada , what you cant do is get caught in the states with it . Since 9-11 it is illegall to have pretty much anything bad in your possesion
Process for importing scope into Canada:
1) Buy scope
2) Unpack Scope
3) Throw scope on the floor of vehicle
4) Go home
5) if asked, "I removed my scope last time out shooting... Has been bouncing around in the car ever since".
There you go...

not to mention being the strip searched and arrested at the border.
its not US customs you are playing with its the us state department ( READ: FBI, BATFE ) you do NOT want to play with these guys, they have been setting up check points before customs if you are busted with an ITAR controlled item you will be arrested, jailed, searched, your car will be impounded. then seeing as you would be charged in the US under arms trafficking regulations you would most likely lose your PAL here in canada.
the process for importing a scope LEGALLY:
1. apply for import permit
2. wait a few weeks to a month
3. fax import permit FFL dealer in us with a valid export license
4. pay FFL to file ITAR export paper work
5. wait 3 - 6 months
6. ship to canada when approved by the us state department
7. avoid being @ssraped in a us prison because you did it all legally
there are also a few dealers such as opticplanet.com that will do the paperwork for you. They can do it much faster too, i was talking to a sales rep today at optic planet and he said that they can fill out the paperwork in about a week or less.
They still require the Canadian import permit,which you can download,fill out and send off to Ottawa for approval.Add that to your timeframe. Mur

That said I talked to a fella a month or two back who has bought 4 Leupold scopes off ebay, shipped to his house never a problem and dirt cheap too. Now I wouldn't recommend such a thing. just something a fella from my gun club told me.
I am going to buy from Prophetriver. His scopes are a good price.

It does fall into that category,and they must have the Canadian Import document to issue the US Export Permit.You gotta love paperwork! Mur

This is what I was told as well. However it doesn't seem to stop anyone.

I just got back from the States. I purchased two scopes (Bushnell) and had no problems bringing them back. I was even over the two day limit and had to go in and pay the pst and gst. So I had to bring in all my receipts for them to go over.
like stubblejumper said you aren't breaking canadian laws and all canadian customs is worried about is collecting tax/duty but you are breaking an american law which the BATFE/US Customs/US State Department takes very seriously.
Penalties for Export Control Violations
The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)
Criminal Sanctions: A fine of up to $1,000,000 or up to ten years in prison, or both, for each violation.
Civil Sanctions: A fine of up to $500,000 for each violation.
Additionally, for any violation of the ITAR either or both of the following may be imposed:
* The denial of export privileges; and/or
* Seizure/Forfeiture of goods.

Someone wrote a great sticky thread on importing from Brownells (it was based on a .22 conversion kit), but should be a similar process for optics. The trick is to find a dealer that will do their part of the work. Great tip about OpticsPlanet - I didn't know they'd export. Thanks.
So i'm reading here lots of scary posts about possibly getting banned from the US and chared under ITAR etc...
But is there actually a documented case anywhere of this happening to someone?
