Fired my DA Outlaw SxS 12.5" for the first time this weekend. Loaded one round into the right chamber, cocked the trigger, fired. Went to open the chambers and the barrels will not swing down. The barrels will open slightly (1/2") but will not open completely. Tried to open completely with forearm removed but that did not work either. Gun dry fires ok. Does not matter if safety is on or off, will not open completely. Used a 2 3/4" Winchester field load if that matters. Is forcing the barrels open the best option ?

Also, is anyone else noticing any change in finish of their shotgun ? I am having parts of the shotgun turn almost a patina color. Gun was purchased approx 2 months ago.

Try returning fired hammer to half ####, if you have that option, full #### if you don't, then try opening action, what I'm getting at is: are hammers of the "rebounding" type? Like on some very old guns, the hammer can keep pressure on the firing pin after firing, forcing the firing pin into the detent of fired primer, causing hard opening, guns without rebounding hammers required being put into half #### to relieve pressure on the firing pin. Not doing this on old guns can also damage the firing pin as it is dragged from the hole, this is more of a problem on old falling block actions.

What he said.... if even with the hammers cocked it still wont open, remove the firing pins, its easy enough to do, keep track of the springs and also there are fine washers in there. With the firing pins out of the way it should open, and if not, at least you have them out of the way, and wont break or damage them.

I will have to check again but unless I am misreading, I do not think it is the firing pins. When I crack open the barrels, I can see the primer and it did not appear to be obstructed by the firing pins.

RE: the warranty, I sent a message to CanAm last night and am waiting to hear back.

I have only used an outlaw that I borrowed at the range, however, I had the exact same issue. That combined with a terrible POA (slugs) settled my want for it. Looked great, functioned poorly.

We were out with a buddy of mine that an outlaw. First number of rounds and it was quite stiff to open. The latch (not sure of the technical term) to release the action really had to be pushed hard to fully open the action. Pretty sure it was similar to what you are describing as if the latch wasn't fully releasing. After a 100 or so rounds things loosened up.

Same problem as you guys. Opens fine when empty, but after firing it's really hard to break open. I though it might be firing pins sticking as suggested or something with the release.

Got mine open by cracking it across my knee, haven't shot it or investigated the problem since. Now I know why they call it a break action!

Check the fired hulls. If the primer indent is slightly oval instead of round then the primers are not retracting sufficiently into the breach face making the gun harder to open.

I'm leaning more towards this too.

I've tried it with snap caps and empty hulls (previously shot) and don't have any problems breaking the action.

On my next day off I'll shoot it some more and check out the primer dents.

Ditto for mine as well, although it's good for 6-10 rounds before it seizes like that.

It won't have anything to do with the hammers, they aren't connected to the barrels in any way whatsoever. No rebounding hammers, they are as basic as basic gets, they are either at rest, cocked, or in the process of firing.

What CB said about the firing pins not retracting could be the solution, I found it could be a little stiff to open on occasion. Nothing that I felt had to be forced. Between my dad and me, we'd run about a 25 shell box through it at a time, never got it silly hot, but it was definitely warm, and never had any problems with the action getting jammed shut.

I would say to just open the opening Lever as far as it will go, and give it a bit of muscle, no need to go gorilla, it's also possible the bases of the shells expanded ever so slightly, which kind of locked the action closed, that has happened even with my Remington 870 Super Mag (when it was brand new, anyway).

Hope you get it sorted out, it is a very fun gun.

DA? Dominion Arms? If thats the case it says it all, piece of crap!! Stick it in a farm field stock down in the ground and use it as a lightning rod, then contact the store you bought it at and demand your money back! Anyone selling these kind of pieces of junk to the public should be ashamed of themselves.

Not quite fair. While the Outlaw is an unmitigated piece of s**t some of their 870 repros are serviceable and a reasonable option now that Remington isn't exporting guns with barrels under 18.5" for non-LEO use.
