Does anyone out there own a Handi-Rifle in UltraVarmint .204 or .223? I'm looking for a reasonably-priced small caliber rifle that will give me good to excellent accuracy. I'm kind of caught between the H&R, Stevens and Remmy SPS. The fact that the H&R is a single-shot doesn't bother me as it'll be used only for hunting paper, and won't be used past 300 yds.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

No one brand will consistently be better than another. There are good and bad within every brand, so my advice would be to buy whatever you want. Hard to go wrong with a 223, although i am a hard core 204 lover, but then I reload my own.

My personal preference is anything Remington, but I admit that is just a Ford vs Yugo thing. I would tend to stick with a bigger name for ease of access to accessories.

Get what you like, get what you can afford, and I guarantee that before long, you will have more than one rifle in your safe anyway.

"...Handi-Rifle..." You'd be better off with the Remington or Stevens/Savage bolt action. Handi-Rifle's aren't target rifles.

I have an Ultra Varmint in .243 and it will shoot half MOA consistently with handloads. Most factory ammo runs around an inch. But it sounds like these guns are a little hit and miss, some are accurate, some are not.

Thanx all. I am leaning towards the Savage 200, just based on what I've read to date and the possibility of future upgrades, but my son has been pressing me to get a Handi-Rifle. He's got a thing for crack-barrels. Must have dropped him on his head when he was a kid or something.:nest:

"...my son..." Buy him one if he's old enough. Epp's is listing two Handi-Rifle's in .444 Marlin at $284.68. They can get 'em in other calibres.

Heck, he's 30 years old and making more money than I am. let him buy his own- and maybe think of his poor old poppa while he's at it.lol

I shoot a handi bull barrel in .204 and for the money its hard to beat, shoots under an 1/2 inch easily with 40 grain berger handloads, One good thing about the Stevens 200 is that its an easy rifle to upgrade with lots of parts available, a great place to start a "Project" rifle.

I've got the Handi rifle in 223 bull barrel. I can get 1 1/2" groups. The issue as well with Handi Rifles is the extractor hangs up sometimes and you have to carry your cleaning rod to pop the spent case out. I'd go with the Stevens or Remmy. Also the heavy barrel is a pain with a sling as the rifle will not stay upright on your shoulder. It keeps sliding barrel down.

I too have the handy rifle in .223 with the heavy barrel. I hate the trigger but love the rifle. It shoots 1.5 inch groups and is just well ..."handy".

Seriously, it's a fun cheap rifle that is as accurate as can be expectetd for the price.

The least accurate rifle I owned was a H&R Ultra Varmint fluted in 22-250. It would also have ammo get stuck inside too. I'll never buy another again. Some are accurate and some are not. I'm not willing to take chances. Go with a stevens.
