I'm interested in creating a replica or clone of the Vietnam era M40 sniper rifle. Should I just start with a rem 700 (wood stock), heavy barrel and add a Redfield accu-range 3-9X scope ( weaver 3-9X44mm scope)?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

He built this one for me: Rem 700 action, Rock Creek 5r barrel....

I seen a mcmillan m40 usmc return stock on ee for 700.00 dollars, good place to start.

WOW someone is certainly gouging. There was a good number of USMC return stocks offered a couple of years ago by McMillan and they sold for $250.00 USD and included the bottom metal and a certificate of authenticity.
For about the same $700.00 you could have a new M40 stock that does not have all the hacks and marks on it.

The M40 stocks had molded in camo, like Carls does, in woodland camo, many were painted after the fact by the individual marines to better suit the environment they were in at the time.

If interested in an early 70s M40 we have a Mk4 10X off of an M40 from that time period.

As others posted we do build these rifles as requested.

The actual M40a1 stocks were molded in "Forest Camo" which has slightly brighter colours than the McMillan "Woodland" pattern. On a more related note, I think the OP was looking to build an M40 clone as opposed to the M40a1 - so he'll probably need a slick sided (no checkering) hardwood stock rather than the later fiberglass one. I've heard of guys taking ADL stocks and inletting them for BDL bottom metal (as the non checkered stocks seem to be more prevalent in that configuration). Check with Numrich Gun Parts - they've had the plain jane vintage looking wood stocks in the past and may still... The barrel and action shouldn't be too difficult to source as they were pretty similar to the varmint contour used today (only in 24" length IIRC). The most difficult will be getting a period Redfield scope with the proper "tombstone" reticle. These command some relatively high prices when found in decent shape - as do the original Redfield scope base/rings. Best of luck.

Its a rem 700 action, rock creek 22 inch 5r barrel, McMillan m40 woodland camo stock, ATRS bottom metal (AI Mags), ATRS 20 moa scope rail, jewell trigger. All very nicely put together by Rick ATRS. They are truely a great outfit!!!

M40

Ya might want to check out Texas Brigade Armory. They make replicas of various M40 models. I've heard both positive and negative reports on thier quality, but no matter what, you will find a parts list on thier site.
