the Tactical is an Express with extra bling, and in this case an expensive paint job.
the Police models arent just 'finished' to a better standard - theyre built to a better standard. far better machining, quality and components. there is no comparison between an 870P and an 870 Express, but this is Remington's new marketing tactic to foist Express quality on buyers at 870P prices.

the only thing good about that gun is that the 18.5" barrel is threaded for chokes, but thats not worth the crazy premium you pay. buy an 870P.

express with stuff on it not higher QC or prep work has been done to it.
This is why company like wilson combat make money.
You cant buy an out of the box tactical shotgun, it has to be built.

just amazes me that Remington discovered that they can take a $350 Express, stamp Tactical on it, add a completely useless (to civilians) breacher choke and paint it an equally useless desert digital camo and they can sell it for twice as much - $700 (the price of an 870P) - AND PEOPLE WILL BUY IT IN DROVES :runaway:

just goes to show where the average users priorities lie, and what we have to look forward to in the market in the future.... more guns like the Mossberg Rolling Thunder and Roadblocker.

Yep. That's the reason I won't be getting one. If it was a police model it would be worth it.

I have Rem 870p with factory 14" bbl, + 1 extension and ghost ring night sights. It's smooth as silk and I love it, but I still want to get a set up with an 18" bbl and +2 extension. So from what I've read, all these tactical versions are built off of the express platform, but what about the Rem XCS with Black TriNyte corrosion resistant coating and interior parts that are coated with electroless nickel or the all nickel Marine Magnum. Are these also just an express with an all weather finish? I've read that an express has cheaper plastic parts like the saffety where as those two don't. Are these two configurations on par in terms of quality with a Rem P?

I'm pretty sure the marine magnum is just an express. It certainly seemed that way when I looked at one compared to my work issue police model.

the marine magnum is based on the Express. it doesnt have a plastic safety (and if it did it would be a cheap fix), but it does have a plastic triggergroup. the plastic safety is the Mossy 500 vs 590A1 :D

IMHO your 14" barrel and +1 extension is a better config than the 18" and +2. the latter is just too bulky and muzzle heavy, especially when fully loaded. if youre itching to spend money, spend it on getting your 14" barrel tapped for chokes. the 870P barrels are thicker than the Express barrels so theyre even more ideal candidates for threading for chokes.

how much can it cost to tapped a barrel?

Ellwood Epps charges $100, i would assume most gunsmiths would charge something similar. the Remington barrels are not chromed, so thats actually a plus in this case (i couldnt get my Benelli Nova Tactical tapped for chokes because of the chromed barrel).

...plus the cost of whatever chokes you want to buy. if you dont want to invest much initially, ive seen cylinder bore Rem-chokes on the EE for ~$10+shipping.

I just recently sold my Rem 870 PMAX. One of the finest pump action shotguns I have ever handled or owned. Yes, the PMAX was definately a quality built gun.....I was considering the Rem Tactical line of shotguns but saw the PMAX at a local dealer (Reliable in Vancouver) a few years back and immediately went with it. No comparison in build quality and materials. I could have bought two Tacticals for the price of the PMAX though.....lol. I saw one for sale awhile back at CRAFM. Price was up around $1500 or so.
