Got my sling and oiler today from Ebay.

Nice gun; I had one & I thought it was way cool. Some purist's and gun snob's will slag on it for not being genuine surplus. I liked the way mine handled and shot; it didn't like American Eagle ammo so much though. It would stovepipe about 1 in 8 rds; I think the ammo wasn't hot enough. There was no alternative choice in ammo where I lived.
Don't take it to seriously if somebody speaks poorly of it; some folks are wired that way.
I'd own another if the price was right.
Stay safe.

TIKKABOY and TOKGUY and they admit readily that they like and respect the M-1 Carbine!

That's almost as bad as me admitting that Kar98ks are pretty!

One of the reasons I like CGN: the snobs and purists seem to be somewhere else. We can come HERE and admit, right out loud, that we like most of them and that we aren't in the business of dissing what the other guy might have.

And those are a couple of seriously pretty Carbines... but you never heard me say that.

Enjoy!

Thinking on the lowly commercial, nonmilitary Carbine for a moment.

People diss them because they weren't "real" Carbines.

Sure they were and they are!

ALL Carbines were/are commercials: NONE were built by the Government plant. Every single one of them was built as a commercial product, by a commercial plant, for commercial sale, when you boil it right down to principles. Only difference is that the Gummint bought them in bunches and the civvy ones went out in small lots.... and likely were finished a lot nicer. I have seen a Carbine that was air-dropped into Denmark in '43, used (quietly) until the Danes "walked them to the border on their own flat feet" (as the owner of the gun said to me). His was a nice gun but it definitely was wartime and has a wonderful history, but it was finished to the military standard of finish, not as nice as a so-called 'commercial'.

It is because we still accept the lower standards of finish and still find military originals to be attractive for their design and manufacture and their history..... that some of us prefer "dirty old army guns", as I have heard them called for many years..... that we are Gun Nuts and that we are here in the Milsurp section, arguing merrily with each other and preserving these examples of human history..... and looking askance at the odd 'commercial' Carbine, the odd 'commercial' Snider, the odd 'commercial' Lee-Metford.

But secretly we all want to own one!

M1

I bought this one a few weeks ago from another CGner, the wood ahd no finish on it. Which was perfect for me, I put a couple of coats of red chestnut stain on and then 3 coats of satin finish varethane, ordered the sling from Ebay and voila! Funny enough I originally posted on main battle rifles forum and then was told I should post on MILSURP  Oh well.

here is my universal as i bought it

Small world, I sold my Universal to a friend just about 40 min's west of Red Deer. Hmmm... did it come with about 5-6 5/15 mags? How long have you had it? I sold mine several years back. If it's a recent acquistion I'd bet it's the same gun. Athough mine didn't have a recoil pad when I sold it, I was able to handle the recoil.:p
Nice gun

the rifle was bought from a CGNer in BC i think last year sweet deal though thanks again .
but the front/top hand guard came from the US from another CGNer which cost me a can of tim hortons . i lucked in as it was light wood that matched most i seen were dark .
the bayonet front strap was fleabay as was the sling , i also have a mag pouch for the stock is a reproduction .
removing the front sight was a pain , i had to make up a puller as its pressed on .
