Making a 300 Win Mag rifle for long range soon. I've always been a fan of trying to hit things that are just stupidly far away, like .22LR subsonic at 300 yards or even 6mm BB airsoft at 100 yards, for excrement and laughter.

Right now I think the Falcon 5-25 would sit on top of my future build beautifully, but I'm not sure about it's range of elevation adjustment. Are there scopes in the same price range, with MOA reticule, FFP and 5-25~ magnification with a wider adjustment range?

I still being able to shoot closer ranges, like 100 yards, how low will the elevation on a Falcon FFP 5-25x50 allow me to go with the 210 grain Sierras out of the 300 Win Mag (probably sitting on top of some Retumbo)? I'd want to see what I can hit at a full mile (1600 yards+) and more.

Will angled/canted scope rings stop me from shooting closer up? I want to be able to take some shots close up (100 yards-ish) then click elevation in for whatever range.
 
if you are worried about not enough elevation you can buy tapered rails or burris signature zee rings with inserts to angle your scope down. im using the burris rings on my savage with a falcon 4.5-18x56mm and it works great. with these rings you can get different inserts depending on how much of an angle you want. you may need to get high rings so the scope doesn;t touch the barrel. i have about 2mm clearance with high rings.
 
1600 yards, 1016ft/s velocity, -1015.2 inches of drop from 100 yard zero, -60.6 MOA, 602ft/lbs.

3000 yards, -7392.3 inches of drop, -235.3 MOA, 781 Ft/s, 284 ft/lbs.

Now, could that scope dial down that far?
 
not likely, the falcon has 80 moa of adjustment. you will lose some of that when you zero your scope too. i had about 50 moa left.

So at the very least I'll be asking Mystic (whom I thank for all his help) for some proper rings and bases.

Any scopes that can adjust farther down?
 
You just have to shim your scope to max the elevation adjustment you have.

The most a high mag scope is going to have is 100 to 120min with 100mins the most useable value.

This is the SIII LR 6x24 scope. If you add the elevation afforded by a mildot or hash mark reticle, you can gain some more up - up to 40mins.

By shimming your base ALOT and using a set of Burris Sig ZEE rings to fine tune, you can set your zero to be very high. When going to a mile with my 223 and a scope with 45mins of elevation, I had a 1450yd zero. At 100yds, it shot just under 4 ft UP.

Kind of useless for most uses but it got the job done.

With the SIII, you can set the scope so full down is set for 100yds, then you have the full scope movement to get you out to a mile. So to reach a mile, the equipment available today makes it easy.

to go beyond that, you will have to consider mechanical scope bases so that you can create HEAPS of up. But that really depends on the bullet you will use and how it flies that far out.

I will try pushing the 7mm 180's beyond a mile and see what happens. I have already pushed the 139gr 6.5 Scenars to approx 2345yds and it got there. Predicatable accuracy on the other hand wasn't so good (but then any wind causes massive bullet movement). I hope to also try pushing the 140gr 6.5 Berger VLD out for S&G's.

Okay I get what you're all saying. Will two 0.020" inserts on the ZEE rings be enough to have my 100 yard zero at the upper limit of my scope's MOA adjustment, therefore letting me click down all the way for uselessly long shots? I shouldn't need more than 0.040" of shimming, right?

From what I see, I'll be able to get about 100 MOA of adjustment while still being able to set the scope back on a 100 yard zero, and from JMB, that should let me hit 2000 yards. I deem that acceptable.
