I have a 5.56 ammo box and on the side it mentions that 840 rounds are supposed to fit into it on 10 round clips.

well i have the clips and the cardboard but i cant for the life of me figure out how its supposed to be organized.

any thoughts?

Might not be the best example..

oh i think i figured it out, i go 2 rows of five across rather than the 6 you have and then 2 sideways instead of 3 like you have, i do 2 rows of that and then throw another 4 on top and i'm good to go

Where did you get the 840 Cart can? Standard CF training pack is an M2A1 can with 910 Cart, 10/stripper, 3 stripper to a cardboard, 30 cardboard plus one stripper loaded into a mag charger per can.

i think i see my problem, my cardboard holds 3 strippers yours seem to hold 2, is my assumption correct?

Hi Paul -

being that it was me who sold you the strippers and cardboards, I hope I can shed some light on the issue. :)

The cardboards that you have are meant to hold 30 rounds and slot neatly into a 4-pocket AR15 bandolier, not to pack neatly into boxes like the 20 round boxes shown in most packing pictures.

This will cause some dimensional issues if you try to pack things the same way as most do with 20 round boxes... so you may have to get a little creative with your solutions... ;)

As stated, Cdn trg pack is 30 rd boxes: four stacks of boxes stacked six boxes high, another stack of five boxes with a ten-round clip in a charger on top, and a lone box on end. 30 boxes X 30 rds = 900 plus the clip = 910 in the can.

Cdn op pack has six X 100 rd bandoleers in the can. Ea bandoleer has four pockets. Three pockets have a cardboard sleeve holding three 10 rd clips, the fourth pocket holds a charger with a clip of ten rds in it.

US 556 can come in 810 rd cans. Last I saw was M856 Tracer, and it was two ten rd clips per cardboard sleeve, the stacking method for the sleeves in the can escapes me.

thats hilarious!!

i got the can at forest city surplus here in London so it could literally be from anywhere but its written in english.

"840 CRTG 5,56MM
BALL M855
10 ROUND CLIPS

LC-03E152-172"

this is what is writen on the green can in yellow writing.

and i got the cardboards from Doc M so if they are not meant for packing in a box then i will just make up my own way.

so far i can get 870 in there using my cardboards

Definitely, unequivocally, that's a US surplus Lake City ammo can. The LC in the coding clears that right up. I get 'em at Princess Auto now and again, they're great. The 40mm linked cans are awesome for my range gear (eyes/ears, staple gun, staples, targets, etc.)

And, if you can get 870 when it's nominally 840... seems you've successfully reinvented the wheel!!!

so i have the carboard sleeves and not the cardboard boxes

If you want original looks, you could go on a USA website and ask if someone would tell you the stacking pattern for the cardboard sleeves in a can of M855 Ball. I doubt their surplussed ammo is packaged that way, but someone looking for authenticity for Service Rifle shoots may know the pattern.

In fact, their National Matches have civillian participation. Perhaps the ammunition they use is packeged the same way. I am sure the solution is out there. Had you asked me a year ago, I could have cracked a can and told you! :)

Ive got this kicking around:

Best pic I have showing the 30rd sleeve versus the 20rd box

Keep in mind training ammo is box packed, while operational ammo is supposed to be on bandoliers, and the packing method differs as does the marking of the can, and the number of rounds it can hold (due to the fact the bandoliers and stripper clip guides take up more room than just carboard.

Not the loose Mk262 sitting is the sleeve is not a good depiction, as it should be 3 metal stripper clips of M855 - but I did not have a lot of stripper clips - so I just poured loose ammo into the sleeves to fit it in my wall locker.
