Lapua vs. 338 RUM

Is yours an AI? I would think that I should make it an AI as I would be single feeding it anyways.

No, it's the regular version. I single load mine, although since it was an Ultramag action I could use the magazine with 250s.
I liked the idea of an Edge over the ultramag because of the availability of Nosler brass, not because of case capacity. Given a clean piece of paper, I'd do a Lapua.

I am not to crazy about the idea of Lapua on a Savage action.

I know that Savage is going a factory 338LM, still doesn't really seem like a good idea.

Internet rumors I guess.

That is not much steel holding that brass.

I know that with safe reloading and such this shouldn't be an issue, I just don't want to hold my face 2 inches away from that and burn off 78g of 4831..

Its the first one I tried and I went with the minimum load from Hodgdon. Rem brass and Rem magnum primer, 300 grain Sierra Match Kings, 96 grains of US869 and seated ten thousands off the lands.

Any idea of the MV with that charge?

I'm getting 3050ish with 112 grains. Need about 9.5 MOA @ 700 yards with a 100 yard zero. (the cartridge is a bit different:))

You hold your face 2" from the front of the action? Try putting it on the cheekpiece or comb 10" back from the lugs...your groups will improve!:D

I don't have a chrono but I use Lapua Quick Target Unlimited, I needed 8.5 MOA for dead on at 500 yds with a 100 yd zero so it works out at around 2700. I will probably start working up till I get some pressure signs (max is listed as 101.0)

What is it your shooting? This load gives 14 MOA at 700 yds.

I'm fairly new at this so its entirely possible I'm making some errors here-

My scope is 1/4 Minute so at 500 yds I dialed 8.5 MOA and that put me on the money. Looking at the drop charts produced by the program it says to dial 14 MOA for a 700 yd shot. Does that make sense?

8.5 MOA was your correction. What range were you coming up from? 100 yards? 14 minutes low at 700 from a 100 yard zero sounds pretty reasonable.

You need a Chrony. It's really too cheap to not have one.

I punched all my data into a ballistic software program (JBM). The results were all wrong:(
Good thing I use a 4' by 8' sheet of plywood covered with white poly. Makes it easier to find the holes and adjust accordingly.

I prefer to do a real drop chart for the round I use. Costs more, takes more time, BUT IT WORKS. And you become intimate with your equipment and load.

The only way to know for certain is to try it. If alone, you can use a dirt covered hillside on a dry day. Look for the puff of dust. Use a lower power on the scope.

JBM told me 11.5 @ 700 yards. Actual was 9.5.

Too Many Guns,

It sounds like some of your input must be wrong to be off by that much (9.5-11.5). I think the models they use on the programs should be very accurate at that range. I would be curious to know why the difference.

I tend to agree with you. When I mentioned a clean start, I meant a custom singleshot with a Lapua boltface. I've added it up every which way, and I'm not sure it even makes dollar sense to make an action into something that it isn't.
In the meantime, my budget Savage Edge is holding .5 MOA at 800, so there is no pressing hurry.

Ah, of course. The models used on a program are always correct. Silly me. What was I thinking? Next time I'll use an iPhonePadPod

Easy to explain the difference. My rifle is fine tuned big bore hotrod.:)
