After research on the internet looking for info on less lethal 12 gauge shells, it appears that most of these recipes are just bunk. No real world data was found at all. I am thinking of around 8 grains of Red Dot in a WW low brass plastic case, WW 209 primer, WW red wad and fill it to the brim with coarse rock salt. Good heavy star crimp and see what happens. Will it detonate and explode hurting myself and damaging shotgun? I think not. Will it travel 50 feet and have a wide pattern......perhaps. Do any of you shotshell reloaders have any actual data that you have experimented with? I am not new to reloading, someone must of tried salt or peas or something in the last 100 years.

In any case of making shells with rock salt or any other completely silly and unsuitable material, the wad wil be the only thing that does any damage. I have heard of guys using chunks of dowel but you'd have to get it right or you could easily have something that is likely to kill.

"less lethal" not "less than lethal"

If you are using a gun to defend yourself, it is a lethal weapon, and you are prepared to take a life.

If I wanted to kill booboo I would give it a hit of 375 H&H. As I do not want to kill poor dumbass bear, just let it know it is not a good place to forage around the house. This is bear country, only blacks and they are everywhere this time of year. People are scarce, if bears have no fear of man they will get shot one day. Ever since they quit the spring bear hunt in Ontario bears abound.
CanAm, do you stock any riot control 12 gauge rubber ball loads?

Not at this time, but there are a few wildlife control places that do sell rubber SGS.

There used to be a CIL 12 ga. blank(had the word in big, black, letters on the shell.) that had a 2" wood fibre wad. The wad went right through a 2 x 4 at 10 yards.
Knew a guy, long ago, who said he had taken a load of rock salt in the butt. Said it took hours to dig 'em out. True or not I don't know, but anything hard is going to hurt and penetrate if you're close enough.
Those india rubber balls riot cops shoot around will break bones if they hit too.

I found a few Fiocchi's marked Law Enforcement, they are 12 gauge and shoot out a single rubber 'baton' per their markings. As I live in an area where bears abound, and do not want to kill and have to report and then have to take a 'bear aware' course. These rounds should do the trick. Its too bad they stopped the Spring bear hunt, their numbers have increased as much as the deer population has decreased. So until hunting season this fall, if required, these rounds should do the trick.

Cheese!

All right, Mythbusters successfully fired a CHEESE load out of a cannon on one of their shows recently. So not totally bunk, but a starting point for your reloading vs. purchasing. It was reportedly used in naval combat. They even tried a few varieties to help with the starting point. Add in a little cayenne pepper on the front and you might give yogi a little something extra. Putting a bag of it inside the cheese may make it a "flechette" or something illegal.f:P:

I had the great idea years ago to cut the crimp off a shell, pour out the shot, and shove the shell into a potato. DIY spud gun if you will. Armed with half a dozen of these, I thought my buddies and I would have our own war games.
One of the pansy ass sissies wanted to try it out first on a pig barn door.
When he fired it at the door, about 30 yds away, I thought he missed. Then I went closer and saw the 3/4 hole through the board and the diagonal bracing behind it. Luckily he shot high enough not to hit any of the pigs.
Lesson learned. Guns are for killing stuff.

some paint ball stores sell some interesting things that might be useful. Capscium balls, rubber balls and plastic. They are light, they are meant to hit people at 350fps. Im sure twice that velocity will get its attention but not injure it unless you take out an eye. Capscium from a paintball gun might change his mind about hanging around. With a bed of cotton Im sure they will hold up to being fired out of a shotgun, I know the rubber and plastic one will.

also if you use a less than lethal round to defend yourself you could wind up in a worse way for defending yourself as opposed to killing the intruder. especially if you load them yourself.
it shows you thought about it before hand, you didn't just go to your safe grab a gun then grab a hand full of shells from where you keep them, you had it all planned out and thought out. as much as it sounds like a good thing to be well planned out like that, people have had the book thrown at them for it.

you might have a hard time getting the Capscium paintballs, they are for law enforcement only.

these guys have what you are looking for.
