So, i'm trying to figure out which glock 17 is right for me. What models are currently in production, Gen3, RTF, RTF2? Is the Gen 4 any better than the Gen 3? I've read some posts that alot of people aren't happy with their Gen 4's. Any input is appreciated.
thanks

From what I read (and this is just hearsay and speculation, so it's worth what you paid), the Gen4 seems to have been modifications made mainly for the .40 S&W, so there's almost no benefit to 9mm, and might run worse for that cartridge. The only real change is the guide rod and the backstraps (well, and the mag release can be moved to the opposite side), though, so I don't know how much veracity there is to such claims.

The Rough Texture Frame is really rough. Not for dainty hands, I can tell you that!

The regular Gen3 is fine, unless you find yourself firing in less-than-ideal conditions without cover a lot, or you're like me and like the strange slide serrations on the RTF2.

I vote gen 3, and scrap the RTF. I found it really bothered my hand after a couple hundred rounds. A few pieces of grip tape on the Gen 3 is what I am planning on using. I love my gen 3 though. Ive shot them all and there isnt much of a difference but I just cant get used to the RTF. The gen 4 is just more complications that take away from the simplicity of the Glock, and thats what I love about the Glock in the first place.

Hey billymc, are you close to a rental range? Have you handled the RTF? I haven't shot the gen 4, so I can't comment on it. I do have the G17 RTF and after a couple inexpensive trigger mods, I'll swear by this gun. My hands look like a cheese grater so I have no problem with the RTF.
Best thing you could do is get your hands on one and shoot as many round as you can through it. Ten rounds won't tell you what you need to know. Buy the right one for you, cause buyers remorse sucks.
peace..

Get yourself a gen 3.5. I don't like gun with fingergrove but I can live with it. But Glock is the gun you should try before you buy, some cannot get used to the trigger, or grip shape and angle and gave it up, it is a good gun but not perfect.

- 1st Generation has the smooth, rounded “pebble-grip”.
- 2nd Generation has the “Grenade-style” checkering with NO fingergrooves
- 3rd Generation has BOTH fingergrooves AND accessory rail on the front dustcover.

there was a transition period when some G20's, G21's got the fingergrooves but did NOT have the accesory rail....

gen 3.5 is most commonly used when talking about G17's when glock switched from a 1 pin frame to the newer 2 pin style like the G22 always had...

no rental ranges near me. So, let me get this straight, the gen 3.5 comes with the rtf2 which is crazy abraisive, and the gen 3 rtf, is decent? I think i'll stay away from the gen 4.

G4's according to GlockTalk and a number of other magazines, are designed to give those with different hand sizes options. They are not a replacement for the G3s or G3.5s. If you like the grip of the G17 3.5's then there in no benefit in getting a G4. Bit if you have small hands or large hands then the optional grip sizes might be to your liking.

Make sure you try other pistols like the S&W M&P etc., the SIG, Kimbers, Colts etc. as fit is a major factor in using and becoming proficient with a pistol.
