.45-70 lee enfield conversion?

I forget the guy's name; but he's in Tomslake, BC. I've heard it's really not that uncommon a conversion. There's even a company in the US that makes magazines specifically for it.

As I recall the price quoted was quite reasonable, something like $500, tho I could be off.
 
navy arms had a conversion in the70's me thinks . I've seen the barrels listed some were.
Lock and Load in Edmonton has converted a number of those. the remington lee was originaly offered in 45/70 also. single coulmn 5 round mag.

That was the Siamese Mauser, built to resemble a sporting rifle...monte carlo stock, checkering, rapid taper barrel. I had one and shot it with black powder.
Was a good shooter though not very traditional.
 
If you supplied the rifle, JR used to do it for about 450 bucks. New barrel, modified magazine, etc. Seemed like a good deal to me.
 
The rifle in the Kelowna shop, was built by now deceased Brian Oldfield. If it's the one I saw. That rifle shoots like a dream come true. The stock is very well done and the metal is very professional looking as well. Brian did most things well.
It may not be your cup of tea or worth what they are asking for it but I know it cost him $850 in parts alone, not including his labor.
Same old story though. Brian built it for his own purposes, not someone elses. If you are about 5ft 8in tall, that rifle should fit like it was made for you. It is well balanced and a natural pointer. His wife must have put it up for sale. It's getting about that time I guess.
 
Sarco in New Jersey has the 45/70 Enfield barrels listed. and yes Navy arms did Mausers also. the ones converted at Lock and Load were Enfield #4 mk1
 
Hard to get a barrel from the USA. Very nice conversion. Looking at $700 - 900 depending on cost of parts and who does the work. Anybody got a mag? By the way,Navy Arms was built on a No1.
 
I've always liked the idea of a jungle carbine converted to 45-70 or .444 marlin.

I may try such a project a little ways down the road. Basically a rebarrelling/modification of feed system, but overall, keeping it in a Mk V. configuration (Handguards, flash hider, bayonet lugs).

Would make one hell of a timber gun.

If you want to convert a rifle to a great powerfull cartridge, grab a crap grade mosin from traadex and do it it 450 marlin, all you need is a barrel. a guy on weapons guild did it and it is dead easy. all in you might be in to it for 400. if you get the barrel off without cutting it you could sell it and reduce cost even further. save money for a recoil pad though.
 
Unsure about the Lee Enfield, but converting Martini-Enfields to 45-70 is quite common. I have even heard of Martini Henry's being converted for the round.
 
I just found this thread and dug into one from the links posted above, what a cool use of a rough enfield. I would totally love to do this if a smith could do it for $450. What # enfield would be best as a donor? I think it would look better with a full length wooden stock like on the sako manlicher's.

Ive tried calling JR's a couple times and havent gotten through (voicemail full and no buisness name on the message), is he still in buisness and doing work? There doesnt seem to be a website for him either, any info?

Edit: I talked to JR's today, nice guy and very helpful. Pricing was $475 for a stainless barrel installed, $120 for a built magazine. He also had aftermarket triggers that ran around $160 installed.

So I think Im going to sell a NF .12 ga and a bushnell scope, buy a MK. 5 action and start saving a couple bucks.

He said a MK.4 or MK.5 would work, and turnover time for one of these is about 2 months or so.
