Short AR Barrels

I've been told that 10.5" and 11.5" barrels can cause reliability issues. What do they mean?

Im currently look into a Bushmaster XM15-E2S that has a 11.5" barrel on it. Now I trust the seller who says that he's never had any problems with it but other people are telling me to stay away from a barrel that short.
 
I think it has to do with proper cycling of the action. Shorter barrels require a larger gas port to get enough pressure and volume because the bullet is out of the barrel so quickly.

Some one with more AR knowledge will confirm or dismiss this info.
 
Have had good luck with all my short barreled AR`s. I have several 10.5 LMT`s currently. Sold off the two Sabre 11.5`s I had. Again,no issues with any of these. I have found that factory configured short barrel AR`s give guys less trouble than "U" builds. There are some factors to consider with building it yourself. Buffer weight,BCG,Gas port diameter,etc. LMT specifies that some of their BCG`s are not intended for use with less than 14.5" barreled guns. They do,however make BCG`s that work with 10.5 barreled guns. Gas port diameter on a factory made short barrel shold not be a concern as the gas port will be sized for the application correctly. If you have a short barrel made....then the port may require to be sized for barrel length. Again, better to buy a factory made short barreled AR.....in my opinion they give less trouble.

I'd suspect the people who are telling you that short barreled rifles have problems haven't or don't own a short barreled rifle.

I have an 11.5" and it has run flawlessly since day 1. We build lots of short barreled rifles at the shop and have not had a single complaint or issue.

This could cause reliability issues with buffer weight and what note they're supposed to be different for SBR's if I understand correctly.

wouldn't that matter only if you changed from a longer barrel on an upp to a short barrel on an upper? This barrel is stock with this upper from what I understand.
 
No need to drill your gas port larger. Quality bbl, with proper lube shouldn't give you too much problem. If you have cycling problems, try stepping up to a heavier buffer such as H, H2, H3. I'm currently running a 10.5" & 11.5". Running a H2 in buffer in the 10.5". Just a carbine buffer in the 11.5" However, am also running heavier full-auto M-16 BCGs in each. Both shorties are just as reliable as my 14.5", 16" & 20" rifles.
 
I run a 10.3 inch Stag barrel and have never had a stoppage with it. I run my guns until they are filthy too. Just lube them up and go. I have well over 3000 rounds through it as well.
Dirty and dry, you will have issues. Dirty and wet, it will run forever.
