What does everyone think about the Smith Wesson M29-2 (.44 magnum) "dirty harry"

What do you think about this pistol?

I've had a couple, they are sweet guns, but not cheap to shoot. Get one if you have the chance.

Get one if you have the chance and it fits your hand. 'N' frames aren't small.
"...than Clint's..." Yep. Eastwood is very anti-firearm ownership.

I've fired quite a few revolvers and from my experience Smith and Wesson's are some of the finest around, Hard as a rock and cycle very smoothly.

I owned a 6" blued S&W Model 29 back in the day. Kinda brutal with fullhouse 240 grain factory loads but a pussy cat & very accurate with lead reloads at ~ 900 fps muzzle velocity.

However, I sold it after acquiring a blued S&W Model 57 .41 Mag that now sports a 6" barrel & MD Charlton "distinguished tune". And, never looked back.

NAA.

.44 Magnum is my favourite cartridge at the moment. It's easy to find retail ammo for, fun to reload for, satisfying to shoot, no picking up brass... and it could blow your head clean off.

States it was a Model 29 and I remember one in the movie you can actually read the barrel that stated .44 MAGNUM (unless Im thinking of a different movie)

I remember reading that it was a 29 but the armorers bored the cylinder to chamber 45 Colt blanks because they had an endless supply with all the Westerns being filmed.

I was a young teen and my older brother had a 29 in the walnut presentation box and the Dirty Harry shoulder holster. With bony teen hands the recoil was brisk!

ahh, the one handed 50 yard shot with a 41 mag.. centre mass. love clint, love his flics but.....

Huh? I'm not even that good a shot compared to some but the very second time I had to shoot to 50 yards it was one handed and I didn't have any trouble hitting a COM sized target. After it was over me and another revolver shooter did it weak handed and we both got 5 out of 6 on the plate. So someone that is supposedly practiced at this such as Harry Callahan would be wouldn't find hitting COM at 50 all that hard.

I have a 4" model 29-2, and it's worth owning just for its good looks. The trigger isn't as nice as some I've owned. I had a 6" model 629 with a smooth trigger about 20 years ago. It was much easier to shoot double action. My current 29 has a grooved trigger, and seems to have rough spots in double action mode.

The 29s are much easier to handle than the Ruger Redhawk. They also have a far superior trigger. The Ruger can handle hotter loads, and are accurate when shooting single action. I don't know much about their durability, but I doubt you'd ever wear one out. Never did get to shoot the big Colt, but they're so rare they aren't a factor.

One thing I can tell you, when that big cylinder rotates in double action mode, it can have an effect on your accuracy. You won't notice it when you're dry firing, but with six big bullets it there, the rotation creates momentum then snaps to a halt. It takes some getting used to. The Rugers are a bit heavier, so the effect is less noticable.

John777- It's just the aspect ratio from a TV screen. It looked different on the big screen. The original movie featured a 7.5 inch barrel.
