Today, I decided to write a short and sweet range report for anyone interested in the Sig .22 Classic or .22 Conversion kits.

Introduction

I bought the .22lr conversion kit from Questar near the beginning of the year. I purchased 2 kits (one for a friend) and had sighting issues with the kits initially. Both of the kits were shooting about 6-8" high at 30 yards, and had run out of sight adjustment. I talked to Scott at Questar (who was helpful and prompt to respond to my emails) and I subsequently shipped the kits back for inspection. The rear sights on the kits were replaced and I had them back in less than a month. Questar discovered that other kits had the same issues, but have since all been fixed. I decided to see what type of accuracy to expect from these kits after having mine for a while. The following are my results.

Gun, ammo, and the shooter

Here is the gun I was using, it is a recent manufacture 9mm two tone. All ammo types, except for American Eagle, was used (no particular reason for not including American Eagle)
ammo used
Remington Target standard velocity round nose
Federal Champion high velocity 40 grain round nose
Winchester T22 Target XT22LR round nose
Winchester 333 36 grain hollow point
A little about my shooting
In the past, I have been able to put together ~1" groups at 30 yards from an open sight Ruger MKIII Hunter using the same shooting method as used in this test. I have slight double vision in my shooting eye, which could affect the results of this test.

Range trip

Parksville B.C. No wind to speak of, light rain, and a temp of ~12 degrees. Target stand was placed at ~22yards. I was sitting in a chair, using both hands resting on the bench. I chose to shoot the gun using single action exclusively.

Results

Each of the 4 targets is on a full sheet of paper. 10 shots per target using the different ammo types

Bottom right - Winchester Super-X

An additional 10 rounds of each ammo type on the same targets

Failures

I had failures (FTF and FTE) with every ammo type except for the Federal Target. There was nearly 1 failure per mag during the test, usually in the first few rounds fired. I believe that this high rate of failure was due to the method I was using to shoot (mag resting on the bench, and my grip). After shooting the targets, I shot the remainder of all the ammo I had (~350 rounds or so) and had minimal failures while shooting strong and weak hand, both supported and unsupported, all while standing.

Conclusion

The kit had a bit of a sighting issue in the beginning, which was quickly corrected. The kit isn't the most accurate gun out there, but is still accurate enough at close distances to be able to practice with cheaply and effectively. The kit had lots of FTFs and FTEs during the test, which was probably due to my shooting method. Failures were few and far between afterwards, when I didn't rest the gun on the bench while shooting. All in all, I am happy with the kit and will be putting a lot of lead down range with it.

No it wasn't your problem, by looking at your target, I think the way that you shooting is just fine and decent, all .22 semi pistol work better with high velocity ammo 40 gr or over and that is why Federal Champion that you used without failure and the other ammo just not enough power to cycle the action, it happend to my 10-22 too. And you shoot way better than many shooter.

I have this kit as well. I bought from questar too, and I find it shoots very high. Do you know what they did to correct this?

I use winchester 333 ammo as well because it is so cheap, functions great, its a blast to shoot. Mine has lots of failures to feed too. I find a lot of times after putting in a new mag, and chambering the first round I get a FTF. Couple stove pipes too. But I do go through mag after mag with no issues as well. Not a perfect gun, but really fun, and great cheap practice with a sig226

They had to replace the rear sights. The screw that they use with the new rear sights is too long to utilize the full adjustment though.

Your FTFs and FTEs are pretty much exactly like mine, almost always within the first few rounds. I did notice that sometimes the bottom round in a full mag is tilted, but I haven't checked to see if this makes a difference. It's weird, it seems like I have a run of FTEs, then it runs like a top for the next 10 mags, no matter how many rounds are through it without a clean.

I've since noticed that the plastic guide rod on the kit is getting really scratched up and I'm wondering if friction against the slide is causing some failures (since it could prevent the slide from recoiling fully, or could slow the slide going forward into battery) May have to get a metal guide rod...

All in all, still a great purchase

Glad I'm not the only one! Mine functions just like you are describing, when the FTE's and FTF's happen they happen close together, 2-4 malfunctions within 1-2 mags, then its failure free again for the next bunch of mags.

I just recently numbered my mags, just scratched in a 1 and 2 with a knife on the bottom to see if its the same mag giving me the issues all the time. Haven't shot it enough since then to make any conclusions though.

I also notice the bottom round in my mags is slanted sometimes, I thought this might be the cause as well, I usually give it a solid whack on the bench to try and straighten it out.

I just checked my guide rod and haven't noticed any excessive scratching or damage, still looks in good shape to me. I probably got about 3K rounds through mine so far, but haven't been keeping track.

Despite these problems I would still recommend this gun. Its super fun to shoot, I'm not the best shooter, I get about 1.5 inch groups at 7 yards with it. Less than that sometimes but not consistently yet. I would like to put a few hundred rounds down range with a mark II or something though to compare and see if I shoot that one any better. Haven't had the chance yet though!
