Well the 3/8" mild steel might as well have been a piece of paper to this 300wm.... :D It made a litle bit of a "zing" when it went through it, I could hear it on the camera when I got home, but no gong, haha :D

Damn right I had fun! So much I went back out today to try the 3/8" mild steel. Now it looks like the T1000 from Terminator 2 when he got it with a shotgun point blank. :D I managed to somehow get a round through the plate and hit the rebar frame I made, it bent the rebar almost in half after going through the plate....damn. The amount of power that comes out of this gun is astounding to me. :D Thanks for the advice and always safety first for sure!

If your looking for a gong try a tool and die shop that does dies for highspeed or high tonnage presses, They may have some scrap bolster plates. Made from 4130 alloy they are often heat treated 1.0 inch or thicker, weld a few links of chain to each top corner and hang, gives a good ring + a good impact whap. Cold bore shot was right on vertically, but a little to the left. 2nd shot went a little low, 3rd a little high, then 4th a little to the right of the 3rd shot, and 5th a little high and to the right. Is this the gun or me? I think I need to buy some more guns so I can do some testing. Plus it's a excuse/reason to buy more guns. :D

Is the barrel free floated? Are you letting it cool a couple minutes between shots? I've got a stevens 200 in 300WM, and it heats up the pencil barrel VERY quickly. 300WM and pencil barrels, are awesome, within their purpose, which is typically hunting at longer ranges. For Plinking at the range, you're gonna want to toss lead downrange, I recommend, a 10/22 and maybe a CZ858, or an SKS, cheap ammo, and no particular need to worry about overheating the barrel. Figure 7.62x39 uses 23 grains of fairly quick powder, and 300WM uses 70-76gr of very slow powders, and you can see why the lighter calibre won't heat up nearly so quickly. Basically, I'm figuring your shots are walking due to the barrel heating, and possibly not being free floated.
Since I got my heavy barrel Savage in 22-250, my cz858, and the 10/22, I mostly leave the 300WM at home. The only reason I don't sell it is (I've turned down plenty of offers, please no PMs asking for it :)), I know the day is going to come where I'll need exactly that gun, and I don't want to have to find another one, plus it was my first and that makes it special to me.

BTW seriously dude, are you printing your own money? You sell your brass instead of reloading? You'll go from $1.50 per shot, down to about 65 cents per, assuming 5 cent primer, 30 cent bullet and 30 cents powder, that is if you keep instead of selling your brass. Also fireformed brass, with your own custom load is way more accurate. It's pretty rare to hear anyone doing much better than MOA with factory ammo, and unless you're shooting at 500y, that isn't MOA.
 
I got mine at a fab shop. I asked for 1" CHT 425. He gave me a piece of 1.5" CHT 425 cut into a 10" circle with a 1" hole at the top. I hung it from a tree branch with a piece of chain. He charged me $60 for it but it's worth it. A touch of orange spray paint made it stand out. The guys at the hunt camp were hammering it at 240 yards off hand. Lots of fun.

I let it cool about 3 or 4 minutes between shots. The barrel is still quite warm and takes about 10-20 minutes to completely cool down. I've got it sighted for a cold bore shot, the warm shots go about an inch or two higher at 200m.

I'm going to pick up another rifle soon, but I'm taking posession of my house this month and I've got extra expenses so the guns have to wait. :( Once I get settled in to my new place I plan to start reloading, just no room to do it here in my apt.
