Quite a few of the guys in my hunting group use a Ruger Mini-30 for Deer season. The 7.62x39mm is really a perfect Deer cartridge. I currently have a 30-30 Lever action, but as usual, I have a itch to buy another gun. I pretty much have narrowed my next gun down to a Ruger Mini-30 or a CZ858

I know a SKS would be another option, but I have had a SKS, and I would like something more newer and lighter.

I am leaning towards getting a Ruger Mini-30, just because I know it works really well for killing deer, and it looks pretty good. I know some of the older Rugers have had reliability, and accuracey problems, but the newer ones work really good.

However, if there are some advantages to the CZ858 over the Ruger Mini-30, then I would like to hear about them. I think that the CZ is about $200 cheaper, but its not enough to persuade me to buy the CZ. I really just want to get the best semi-auto 7.62x39 on the market.

Buy the ruger mini 30. The cz 858 is for wannabes etc.

Cz 858's dont shoot any better than a russian or chinese sks. Spend a few more dollars and buy a rifle that is worth the price tag and buy that ruger mini 30, your won't regret it .

please tell me how the hell it is for wannabes?
cheap ammo, lots of upgrades, indestructable?

I had a ruger p90 pistol which was great, until the brrel started peeling. Then I had nothing but Bu**Sh!t from ruger warranty. I could not even BUY a replacement barrel from them. In the end, I sold it.

The rifles are limited because of the ballistics of the caliber. A mini-30 won't shoot much better.

With the CZ you get 4 mags and if you want more they can be had at a decent price. If you want more mags for your mini-30 you better have a fat wallet.

Cz - 858 has problems out of the box , Trigger issues and the so called gremlin problem. Not worth the hassle for the price.

As for the 30 rounds mags? They are too long for certain shooting positions and you may think they look cool but who are you fooling with a 30 round mag pinned to five rounds Better to buy a five round mag, oh wait they are twice the price of the 30 round mags, DOH .

I could certainly be wrong on that.

I did find this post of his from last month in this thread regarding which to buy, SKS or VZ. Seems like he's changed his mind on the VZ.

haha what a dork

I guess the czech army is just a bunch of wanabes eh?

Get the ruger if you want to easily mount a scope, get an 858 if you wanna look badass in the bush :)

I looked at the Mini-30/CZ-858/SKS choosings and went with the SKS. These rifles are all very similar in performance, but the cost of the SKS is a quarter of either of the other rifles. If a guy has a hard-on for one particular rifle, then go ahead and buy that one, but otherwise it's a no-brainer.

HAHAHA, can't seem to make up his mind eh.

If you do have enough cash by both,
if not buy me Bonestorm or go to hell!!!

I think I was in my early teens when Bart shoplifted Bonestorm, that show is like the undead, it just won't die.

OP, buy a CZ, great rifle, TONS of available upgrades, you can pretty much tune it exactly as you like it. Cheap and available magazines are nothing to sneeze at either.

I can't go prone but the banana makes a nice comfy handle for when I dont want to sling, fair trade-off i'd say

Not every one has the gremlin, not by a large margin. In a poll I started last year it was no more than about 25% for all VZ-type rifles in Canada. There's nothing wrong with the triggers. The gremlin fix is a $35 job from Neit Arms.

The 30/5 mag is perfect for prone, just use it as a monopod.

I had a sloppy trigger group and know a few other people at my club who have had gremlin issues. Once again, I would never buy another cz 858 unless the price tag was $200.

I own two CZ-858's just because Liberal assh*les banned it's Russian counterparts in 1995 to "save the childrenz from the scary-looking gunz!!!". So, in a way, my non-restricted CZ-858 ownership is a big contradictory pineapple up their ass, which is always a good thing.

Here's a comparison pic from somewhere "freer" than Kanukistan:

Plus, if other makers see the 858 selling like hot cakes in Canada (which it does), they will make more fun goodies for us in the future. Not to mention that the CZ-858 is a fine firearm, very well made and tough as nails... and, because of its' status, we can show the antis that it also makes a fine hunting/sports gun and is NOT solely a baby killing machine as they would like to claim (which was sadly the case with all AK's back in 1995).

My origional post just asked if there is any advantages in buying the CZ over the Ruger Mini-30. I have owned SKS rifles, and for sure they are the best bang for your buck in a 7.62x39 sized rifle. I used the SKS for one season hunting also, I just found that my buddy's Mini-30 was a lot nicer to carry when we are bushwacking, since it was about 2 pounds lighter. I will probably end up buying a Ruger Mini-30, just because it looks "Military" than the CZ.

I just wanted to know if there is any advantages to the CZ over the Ruger.
