Im thinking about getting one in 6.5x55 I want something to use for both hunting and target shooting out to about 400 yards.

Iv been looking at the Lite model and the HB Varmint stainless What do you guys think would be the best way to go. Keep in mind I want to hunt with it as well as target shoot

good choice... if you can find one!! There was a great deal on a finnlight in 6.5x55 in the EE a couple weeks ago, whoever got that one did well. I've only seen them in the varmint version, not in the t3 light. great choice in caliber... time tested and a proven hunting cartridge. Good luck in your search to find one!!;)

The HB is a pain to lug around the bush!

X2 on that one. I have one in .223 and it's nearly impossible to shoot off hand because the stock is so light, all the weight is concentrated in the barrel.
I would go with the T3 lite if you can find one without question if you plan on hunting trips with it. They are very accurate even without the heavy barrel.

I have a Sako 85 in 6.5x55 and a Tikka lite in .338 Federal..The Tikka T3' and 85's skinny barrels will heat up after not too many rounds on the range and throw shots, although it is excellent as a hunter. A decent heavy barreled 6.5 will be heavy if your hunting requires much walking. So your choices are the hunting weight and take long pauses between shots or the Varmint weight and schlep 9 lbs + around the woods

I think im going to go with the T3 lite. I only shoot 3 shot groups anyway and wait 5 min between strings... And it would be light to take in the bush (mind you anything is lighter then a sporter enfield

I have a t3 lite in 6.5x55. Really accurate and about 7 pounds with a B&L elite 3000 2-7x33. Beautiful little gun with a really nice trigger for a hunting gun. It heats up kinda quick but it's not too bad.

Warn new shooters of the trigger though, it scared my buddy's date a few weeks ago but she shot glocks for a while before it :)

what distances are you shooting it at and what kind of groups re you getting?

I loved my T3 lite....it was chambered in 22-250 and could easily shot 0.5MOA with factory ammo from walmart. Didn't end up seeing a lot of use though, so I sold it.

Have had two in .223 (sold the slower 1 in 12 twist model), one in .22-250, and another in .30-06 (sold it and traded up to a Sako). My experiences with Tikka firearms have all been good.

Tikka in 6.5x55mm

I have a Tikka Model 695 [model prior to the T3] stainless synthetic in 6.5x55mm. It is absolutely an awesome rifle & a "keeper" for sure.

NAA.

I have a T3 Hunter. It was originally chambered in 6.5x55, but I wanted a bit more velocity, so I got it rechambered to 6.5-06. Last Saturday I shot my first actual 1 hole 3 shot group [100 yards]. I'm still playing with the loads to get the velocity up to where I want, but the tikka is a shooter for sure.

If you are primarily hunting with it go for the T3 Lite. If you are going to be doing more target shooting then get the heavy barrel. I have the Varmint in 6.5x55 and it does double duty for me. Bug hole sized groups are possible with either model and good ammo. I believe Epps has a couple of the Super Varmint models in that caliber is stock - check their web site to be sure.

I think Im going to have to go "feel" the weight difference of each. I will for sure be doing more target shooting then hunting. Ill only shoot off hand out to 50 yards anyway, anything more then that I use a rest. Also, If im not road hunting Im usualy planted in one spot and waiting, so I dont think the weight will be an issue
