Semi varminter advice needed

My question is , I want a semi automatic rifle in .223 or .243. My first choice was a AR 15 or Ar 25 but they are restricted in our well secured and well governed country!!##:mad: I will use it occasionaly to hunt varmint and occasional paper shooting. I am not a regular shooter, for now. I intend to shoot at distances around 200 yards.

First, i need some suggestions. The one i found is the Bar model from Browning. Do you own such a weapon or similar? And could you share your experience with me?

Secondo (i hope i won't be judged for this one), what level of precision should i expect from that kind of rifle? For the use i will make of that gun, will i get good precision compared to a "classic" bolt action bull barrel varminter rifle? Can someone compare the precision of these rifles at ranges of up to 200 yards?

And even thoug i am not a regular target shooter, will a regular barrel be good for a morning of 50 rounds at the range?

Well i cant say much about the BAR, but i would reccommend the Ruger mini 14 target. I have heard and seen good things from that rifle. MOA at 100 yards is what they can do. Have fun shooting and, like the rest of us, keep on dreaming about hunting with an AR.
 
If you're looking to punch lots of paper and pop the odd varmint the Ruger Mini 14 Target would be one choice. Lots of guys are getting moa accuracy from them, not bad for a rifle under $1000. If you're looking for something more exotic maybe start at the HK SL8, then perhaps a Swiss Arms Classic or a Tavor. None of these rifles are restricted.
As far as accuracy you won't come close to the accuracy of a bolt gun. Lots of bolt varmint rifles shoot ragged holes at 100 yards, especially the higher end production rifles like Sako, Kimber, Cooper ect..

How do you know these are not restricted?
 
"...know these are not restricted?..." The Mini-14 is not restricted, by name or by barrel length. The Target isn't much under a grand. Epp's, for example, wants $962.44 with no scope. They are listing a bunch of 'em though.
"...good precision compared to a "classic" bolt action..." The BAR shoots minute of deer, usually. It isn't made for tack driving accuracy. It'll do for what you want.

Because the FRT's for the ones mentioned say non-restricted. Scott_R is not lying to you or making this up.

You have just had pretty much every choice there is listed for you. The list of centerfire semi's that offer decent accuracy and are non-restricted is very short. If you insist on a semi, that is a fact you must get used to. There are sounds reasons why heavy barrel bolt action rifles are the overwhelming favorite of shooters looking for high levels of accuracy.

The HK LS 8 and Swiss Arms look awesome! But the price of the HK is around 3500,00 $. OUCH!! My budget is around 1 000,00 to 1 500,00 $. For the Ruger, i don't like the look of the gun at all!

For that budget you are stuck with the Ruger or a bolt action. There are a number of bolt actions that will do very well in that price range.

Sadly then, you're pretty much screwed. The Browning BAR or the Remington 74/740/742 might work for you in your price range. Not the most accurate rifles, but out to 200 yards/meters you should be ok. - dan

Try to squeeze some more cash together and go for an XCR. They fit the cool looking bill and should perform well. Just don't expect it to run with a bolt gun.

From the Modern Military Guns EE Forum, Del Selins is this particular dealer. Prices are in the HK bracket and higher.

When are you going to accept that the answers you have been given are correct? There are no cheap, black, accurate semi-auto centerfire rifles, restricted or non. The very nature of a semi means it is inherently less accurate than a bolt action. For whatever reasons, all black rifles are very expensive for what you get, in terms of performance, and there are very few black rifles that did not get hammered by the Libs and put onto either the prohibited or restricted lists.

It sucks, but those are the facts of life at this point in time. If you want to change that, go read the political action forums, join the CSSA and NFA and get into the fight to roll back all of C68 and restore some semblance of intelligence to our firearms laws.

the Swissarms rung about 3700 Canadian.
the XCR is about 2500,
Tavor is 3100 if you can get it.
been a while since i have seen an SL8, last time though was about 2800
the Mini 14 target is the only gun your gonna find that has Decent accuracy and reliability in the caliber you want. the Remington 7400 is not a target gun, its about minute of deer, and far from the most reliable firearm on the market.

Regretfully here in Canada we are lacking a mid range semi with decent accuracy, that is not Restricted.
 
For your price range, and the understanding that you will need to get some kind of optics, you limit yourself to a BAR or a mini-14. Both will work for your requirements. If you reload you can get some nice results.

I would suggest that you try out the BAR and go from there.
 
You need to decide wether you want it to look cool or to perform well. You aren't going to get both in the same package for anywhere near your budget.

If looks are more important to you then buy whatever piece of crap you can afford and go out and make noise and scare varmints all over the field.

If you would prefer a rifle that can actually hit something then you need to realize the only choice will be a bolt action.

I bought mine new this year for $2200, but some places go as high as $2400.

They come standard with a 20" heavy barrel and free-floating hand guards making them exceptionally accurate off the shelf (as far as semi-auto black rifles are concerned). They are an outstanding varmint gun.
