Need help deciding which handgun Beretta, SIG or STI?

I'm having a really difficult time deciding which handgun to keep. Before I get the "buy 'em all!" response, it's simply not economically responsible to do that. I've got a young family and very little disposable income, so money needs to go to family interests before my personal toys.

To start, the first handgun I had was a Beretta 92F (9mm), it felt really good shooting, but I only put a box through it before I ran into money concerns and had to sell it. So, I never got a chance to really test it out.

The next pistol I had was a Norinco 1911A1C commander (45ACP). It shoot wonderfully, and I probably shouldn't have sold it, but I couldn't give up a great deal on the EE and I could only afford the one pistol, so I traded it for a STI Ranger II.

The great deal on the EE was for a SIG P229R (40SW), which also shot very well, but the grip was far too small for my big hands, so it really had to go.

Currently I still have the STI Ranger II (9mm). It's a really nice pistol, and it shoots like a dream, it's hands down the nicest pistol I've ever owned, however I'm just not 100% convinced I want to own a 1911 that isn't in 45ACP.

I'm thinking that I really need to line up a Beretta 92FS, a SIG P226 and a 1911 in 45ACP and try them all at the same time in order to decide which feels and shoots best for me. I even have all the ammo I'd need for the testing. The problem is that I don't know anyone around that has any of these pistols, or who'd be willing to let me shoot a couple rounds.

My planned use for the pistol is just recreational shooting, home defense and competing in the ORA shoots at CFB Borden.

Are there any gun nutz near Owen Sound that could help out?

fixed that for ya. gotta be all PC!!!

for my big hands, which might be larger than yours, i found the beretta to be great and the normal 1911 to be too thin. grip spacers or aftermarket thicker grips might even out the field, though. but AFAIK, the beretta is 9/40 and the 1911 you want is 45. does competing put you in one class with one gun and a less favourable class with the other gun(s)?

if you find your economic belt being a bit on the tight side, you should probably just stick to 9/40, which kinda knocks the 1911 out, and being that you said the SIG was too small, you're left with the beretta (or taurus equivalent).

The 92FS is my go to gun. I have not fired a gun that feels as good in the hand, and lands as good on paper. The things are tack drivers. When CCW is allowed it will be my carry gun.
You can always upload 9mm to +P standards, so really it will fair out just fine. :)

I've shot a B 92fs and Sig p226 - my preference was the Sig 9mm! If you haven't shot one before, at least give it a try - you can say you owned a Beretta, but you can't say you've owned a Sig (at least not yet :D)!

Well, I did own a SIG P229R. It did shoot well. The problem was the tiny size of the handgrip.

Also, as I mentioned in the first post, I'm trying to try them all, but I can't find anyone who has them nearby.

I'll go for a SIG P226 SS in 9mm, here is mine:

p226 with wood grips, huge grip for my long fingers, my 92fs would be a close second. When it comes to ammo I would go with 92fs in a heartbeat, that thing will eat rocks if you stick em in there lol.

Well if you want to get in to much comp such as IPSC Glock is gonna be the way to go! I love my G17 but I will admit it lacks in the style/beauty department! I do love the 92fs Inox though! Stainless is just nice! But the grips are on the larger side for me! Too wide, same as the Sig!

personally, i'd go for the sig- i've had one locking block on the beretta break at the most inopportune time and it usually takes a while to get another- and it's a CONSUMABLE part- you SHOULD BE ABLE to walk into your local gunstore and get one easily- same deal with the trigger return spring-now, mine has seen a lot of use, but it takes SECONDS to change the locking block
