Hey all.

Started to think about a custom rifle. 408 Cheytac and the 416 Barrett calibers have peaked my interest.

I fella in the business told me (providing I remember correctly.....) that Barrett owns the 416 and haven't allowed anyone to make a chamber reammer for it. Meaning only Barrett can produce rifles in this caliber.

Any thoughts?

The .416 Barret is a necked down .50 BMG case. As a result the US Gov't will not allow export because it could be rebarreled to a .50. Not sure about reamers but complete guns are not going to come north.

Dies and reamers are proprietary or at least were last I checked.
The total lack of projectiles and brass makes the 416B an orphan that will likely only survive in, the "Governator state.
Virtually no-one else has taken this caliber seriously.

The 408 despite some really wild claims that have been very questionable at least has brass, dies and projectiles reasonably available

Is that correct? We already have a lot of .50 BMG rifles in Canada. And some of them come from the US. Seems strange. But then again its the DOS. ;)

You can buy full cartridges, brass, and bullets on the Barrett site. As for the reamer issue there is a custom one shot for sale on Gunbroker.com and it is not made by Barrett. There is also an AR upper made in this calibre again not by Barrett so someone is getting barrels made. RCBS and Lee make neck sizer and die sets for the .416.

But it certainly has not caught on like the .408 Cheytac.

Since shortly after 911 EVERYTHING 50BMG based is non exportable from the USA, at least through legal means. The DOS will not approve an export permit, this includes 416 Barret as it is simply 50BMG necked down to 416.

Barret does not make the reamers but does or did control who was allowed to make them and sell them.
This may have changed, I have not stayed current on it as I feel that caliber is a dead horse. Everything the 416 will do , the 50 does better.

Came from, amigo. Past tense. 50 BMG, ammo, rifles and components (and I believe any bullet .510" dia - not just long slippery ones for the BMG but the 500 Nitro and 500 Jeffrey as well) cannot be exported to us nefarious types North of the 49th. Some guys have illegally circumvented the DOS rules, but they're either brave, stupid, limber or a combination of the three. I'm not, nor would a reputable dealer/importer be, willign to play chicken with the US DOS and all their Patriot Act and ITAR laws. Illegal is illegal. No grey area...except the paint in the cellblock.

The ratio of case capacity to case mouth area is *huge* on the 416. I can't imagine it having a very good useful accurate life in a standard SS or CM barrel.

To each his own, but that is a helluvalotta money and trouble for something you can't really do much with.

Yes, the .416 Barrett will be available in Canada along with the complete line of McMillan rifles by Sept. of this year. Designated as the TAC-416 it is an identical clone of the McMillan TAC-50 using the same action and stock etc. The barrel, chambered for the .416 Barrett, is the only difference.

The Canadian Firearms Centre has approved the TAC-416 as unrestricted and given it the FRT# 132227-1. The USA Department of State has approved its export.

The full line of McMillan Custom Collection and Long Range hunting rifles will also be available.

North American Shooting Systems of Osoyoos, B.C. has recently been designated as the exclusive Canadian importer for McMillan rifles. They are scheduled to start arriving this fall.

Send me a private message if interested.

Say what?

so you make the neck 2 thou longer and call it the 416 butsniffer if you want to be legal .

it shouldn't be that hard to get a reamer built , even if you just give the dimensions to a machinist and ask him to build you one .

I'm first in line for the .416 Buttsniffer. :dancingbanana:
