Yesterday in a trade I received a New unfired Marlin 1895 45/70, its a hefty gun.
Anyone have one or shot one, and how popular are they?

I probably won't be keeping it as I am trying to downsize, in preperation for my wifes retirement in a couple of years.
 
Have one, shoot it a lot. It is an endless source of amusement as you can play around with jacketed and cast, different bullet weights and different velocities.
Accurate and effective on game of any size.

X2. I have a 45-70 Marlin 1895GS and they are a fun thing to shoot and very versitile with the cast and jacketed handloads you can put through it. While I haven't done anything on game with mine I have no doubt as to it's effectiveness.

I've read that on here but haven't tried it in either my 1895GS or T/C Contender carbine 45-70's how does it extract?

I have a box of 2 1/2" 410 and no 410 shotgun so I am very curious how it works.
 
Welcome to the Marlin .45/70 club. Great rifles and you will have a bunch of fun with it!

While some say it's ok to shoot .410 in a .45/70, I would not recommend it. I've done it myself, and it turned out ok, but... The brass on hte .410 shells would expand greatly and sometimes even split. Extraction was a pain, had to use my pocket knife point to dig them out... Some gases made their way out the ejection hole too, not much, but why take a chance? I know ht Marlin action is strong enough to do it, but the size difference although not huge could cause some major, and dangerous issues.

I recently came back to the .45/70 world and will be loading brass shotshells myself for it.

I grew up hating lever guns till I tried one. Bought the 1895M 450Marlin (same as yours but in 450) and it's the best close to mid range hunting rifle I've ever used. Easy to carry and points fast on target, almost without effort. For game I've only ever used it on deer and only shoot cast with it. (Don't really know why anyone would use jacketed stuff in a 45 cal rifle under 2000 fps.) You don't track game hit with a .45, just go pick it up.
 
I have a Marlin 45-70 cowboy and with a 4x scope mounted...it shot a cloverleaf hole at 50yards. Slightly bigger hole at 100 and rang the gong at 200. What a fun gun to shoot if you have the shoulder for the recoil. I have a shoulder problem and cannot take the recoil so have it up for sale. Reloading for it is a lot of fun.
 
If i had to reduce the amount of guns i had, that Marlin '95 would be the last one to go, as it is a dream to reload, including inexpensive cast, as well as reduced loads, and very effective on most game to at least 200yds. If anything I'd look at a couple sighting improvements, and possibly a larger lever if you have big hands or shoot in cold weather.

congratulations you just picked up one of the best rifles in one of the most versatile cartridges available!

I shot one for the first time last year at the East Elgins Sportsmen Association open house last year in Aylmer On. Found it very easy to quickly get on target. Fired it 3 times and hit the gong 3 times at 100yds. Loved it! Very popular out west for guide guns, for grizzly protection. It will take down anything and is easily handled!
