Marlin 1895 45/70

I think now I have owned six 1895's and will always have one in the safe. This one will be my keeper:

The scope is on QD rings so as not to offend the purists. I have Williams FPs as well.

I like the Cowboy too. I'd really like a Sharps, but if the Sharps is too out of reach, one day I might have to go for one of those instead.
 
On a side note, what's the deal with all the talk of reloading 45-70 ammo? I see it's about $2/shot new so I understand if there's a cost saving or you want flatter trajectory. I hope it doesn't mean that this ammo is not readily available?
 
I regularly shoot 480's, but I have some 540's kicking around here somewhere. Haven't tried them yet, but 480's at 1500-1600 fps are safe and pretty destructive. Factory ammo is I think 300gr at ~1800, 405gr at ~1300 or lever evolutions 325gr at 2050 or 2150 depending on which box you buy.
 
I load/shoot either 525gr Beartooth Piledrivers @ 1600fps or Jae-Bok Young 550gr Crater's @ 1580fps these are not top loads just the velocities that Garret recommends for bullets of these weight.
 
I'm loading Bullet Barn 450g RN bevel base at 1620 FPS, 39.5g of H4198. I'd like to push them faster but no decent load data for that combo, and without a gas check I don't know if it's wise. Should stop most anything anyways I would think. My SBL shoots 'em like a dream.
 
The factory ammunition is more than adequate. The 400 grain loads are generally kept at the original blackpowder velocity but they are more than capable of taking deer or similar game.
The factory 300 grain loads are up around 1700-1800 fps and are also quite capable. I have seen all of the factory loads regularly in the stores.
Reloading simply makes it more versatile.
 
My grizz defender. I call him bone cruncher. I load a 400 gr JSP over 59 gr IMR4320, that gives me 1800ish fps at the muzzle. I have the skinner peep sights on him, and can ring the 200 yd gong 4 out of 5 times. I will never part with this rifle.R:d:

59grs? That's definately a lot warmer than say what the Speer manual suggests as a maximum to put through my Marlin 1895GS. Using IMR 4320 they suggest a max of 53grs. I've been using IMR 4198 with both the Speer 400gr Flat-SP and the 400gr Remington. Even in "strong bolt actions and modern single shots", using IMR 4320 with the 400grainer, the 'suggested' maximum is 57grs.
 
I've got a mid-70's vintage 1895 and I will probably never part with it. I put a Skinner rear peep and front sight on and I love the setup. It is incredibly accurate with Winchester 300gr. factory ammo and not bad recoil at all (I found my 1894 in .44 mag was less comfortable to shoot). I do want to load some cast ammo and bring it down to Oklahoma to bust some hogs - I have friends down there and hogs are becoming a real problem, fast and I think hogs and a Marlin 1895 are a match made in hunting heaven.:)

Mine is very happy with a Leupold 3X, and 50 gr of 3031 behind a 400 gr cast. Gets right at 1700 fps, and shoots into five inches at 200 meters.

Very nice Ted:). Looks good and I much prefer the shape of the lever and the pistol grip butt stock design of yours VS the straight stock design of my 1895GS as/post #3.
