Varnish removal?

Just received a beautiful little Underwood M1 carbine from a fellow CGN'er
It has been varnished at some point in its career though. I would like to restore the stock closer to its original look. If somebody has a few minutes to spare, I would really appreciate a few tips on how to accomplish this.

Hi

I use 1858 furniture stripper, the gel type. works well, use in a well ventilated room and use PVC gloves. Take you time and it will life off varnish, you can steel wool with 0000 after the stripper dries.

After you get the stock clean and polished, I like the 1850 tung oil. I have also tried their brand of tung and teak oil, but I prefer just the tung.
Use it sparingly, hand rubbing and it dries within hours, to do it again.
To get the stock to look like the original, don't put on too many coats of the tung.

+1 on the 1858 tung oil. Most milsurp's got a dunk and a hang dry with either linseed or tung oil when assembled at the plant. Springfield's anyhow...
