Aimpoint 3X magnifier

I do. It's all about the mount you use for your 3x magnifier. Get the LaRue flip to the side mount. It's a great set up because if I don't want any magnification during firing I simply flip it out of the way. Also if I decide that all I'm going to do is close in stuff, I can yank the magnifier completely off and save the weight. More options this way. It's deadly out to 300m (covers 12"). Past that my 4MOA T1 becomes a little big. I could still hit a silhouette but not super precise. It would be nice if the T1 could have the 2 MOA dot.

Have been running one behind a T1 for a couple years. They can't be beat. I have mine on the factory Aimpoint twist mount so I can use the base to go passive with a PVS-14 w/TNVC ring.

I have one behind a T-1 as well, and like Big_Red, I'm using the Aimpoint twist mount.

Great combo, and for me, easier to take off if I'm going to run without the optic, or use the 3x as a monocular.

It also allows use of the Aimpoint CEU on the twist mount.

What would you guys say the useful range is when you use the magnifier?

It also depends on the red dot moa size I think the M3 is 2 or4 moa, at 200 plus yards you will find that a 4 moa dot will eclipse the paper target..

Also, if its just for range use the flip mount is great but if its for tactical I would suggest the aimpoint twist mount instead. The flip mount can get hung up or catch through doorways and such.

4 MOA would be roughly 8 inches @ 200....still very usable, even for more precise shots. On the flip mount, did you read this or actually experience it? I've been using this set up for a while now and it's never hung up on anything. I would not hesitate to bring this sighting system back overseas with me.

I own both the aimpoint twist mount and the arms flip mount and I used the flip mount extensively in tactical situations during operation Athena and operation Archer. In a QCB situation while the flip mount was in the open position it would often scrape and bump going through doorways and sometimes get caught up on my gear.
Sadly, we didn't have the twist mounts available at the time but I would have used it in a second.

Well I guess to each his own. If it bothers you, it's too easy to pop the lever and stuff it in a pouch just like the twist mount. I don't have any experience with the other flip mount (Samson/ARMS) but I do despise ARMS throw levers so I will probably never own one to compare.

I still don't see how you'd be bumping it on doors when your holding your weapon in the shoulder in front of you...It sticks out less then a PAQ/PEQ/Tac Light Etc. You'd be hitting those and your strong hand knuckles on the door too if that was the case.

The Trijicon TA11 has a 4 MOA donuts at 3.5X - the original idea of the 4MOA dot is that it will covered the all the POIs within 300m for a rifle, when the target is a human sized silhouette.

What?? Not only does the Larue flip, it also has a little lever that lets you pop the whole thing off and stick it in your pouch if you feel the need.

He's not talking about the LaRue, but the Samson / ARMS mount. They don't all have QD.

Even the ones that do are a lot less "Q" than the ARMS twist-off.

Uh ya they do;

I used to be able to get these with the mounting braket for the 3x optic for about $80 USD shipped to me. Personaly on an AR 15 4x mag is the only way to go but to each there own.

I've owned that one. But I was thinking of this one:

And, as mentioned, not as "Q" as a twist-off, particularly if it's a stiff-ARM'd mount ;)

Having said that, the one you pictured is the one that normally comes with an Eotech magnifier, but the aimpoint version (which pbr streetgang referenced) is also QD:

To the OP's question, the magnifiers work well. I've used both Eotech and Aimpoint and found them functionally identical. The Aimpoint is lighter. And my favourite mount is the larue.

I have been playing around with different optics for one of my fun guns ( shoot scary paper IPSC targets and gongs )

It has had everything from M3 , M2, M4 , EOTec, Trijicon Tripower for RDS
I had a IOR 1-4 as well ( great glass BTW )
Went to a M4 w/ 3X Mag
Tried it with a ACOG TA11 for a while
Went back to the M4 w/3X for good

The great thing about the 3X is it often stick it on other rifles ( thanks to QD feature of flip mount ). Works great behind Tripower , EOTec (on riser ) and obviously all Aimpoints

It is very quick and natural to flip magnifier. Much easier than dicking around with Mag ring of 1-4X scope

My second choice would be the TA-11 but that is on a other rifle now

I used the twist mount first but I manage to lose the 3X for a week . If things aren't bolted on, I tend to misplace them !
If you can't find a Larue then the Samson is a good choice. The Samson uses the provided 4 bolt pattern on the 3X. The Larue requires you to cut the armour off the front of Mag. It felt odd taking a knife to a $500+ optic
